NYMR Webcams

Can anyone tell me why there is so much background noise on the nymr webcam at Goathland? Is there some kind of machine nearby? I live in Tennessee, USA and try to watch a few heritage webcams that have sound.

I presume you're referring to the sound of the Eller Beck, the river that runs adjacent to the station. There's few UK railway locations more tranquil than Goathland.

The webcam camera has an automatic volume control on its microphone. Without a steam train pounding up the 1 in 49 into Goathland station, the microphone becomes very sensitive, and the sound of the water flowing nearby is rather amplified. It doesn't sound nearly so loud when you are standing at the end of the station platform!

Ah cheers for that image: I'd hunted around for suitable photo of the beck from the bridge to illustrate, but couldn't find one!
