NYMR plans for this weekend (28th - 30th September 2012)

Hi all,

I'm considering visiting the NYMR for their gala this weekend coming, and am trying to get my head around what is possible, probably starting in Pickering. I wonder if anyone could help me out please?

In particular, I'd like to get out to Whitby for a fish'n'chip lunch, but the timetable only shows 25-30mins between the train arriving at Whitby and then leaving again. Is that enough time for someone unfamiliar with the area to get out, find some food, and get back in time? Google tells me that the recommended Magpie Cafe is 7 mins walk away, so it's sounding tight to get out, get served, and get back - and 1 minute late means 3-4hours until the next train!

Also, it looks like there are loco sheds worth looking around at Grosmont, but I assume that there is not much of interest worth stopping off for at the other stations?

Regarding the timetable for the gala, does anyone know if I'm right in assuming that every third column (ignoring any freight and pullman columns) will be the same loco+carriages?

Finally, I'm also curious as to why the Sunday timetable shows a train arriving at Grosmont at 9:50 and Whitby at 10:10, but has no departure times; does anyone happen to know?

Don't bother with the Magpie Cafe. It's extremely overpriced and over-rated.
Anyway, you won't have time.
There are two fish & chip shops in Pickering near the station that are far better.

If you want decent fish and chips, get a takeaway from Trenchers. This was always our place of choice as opposed to the Magpie, and what's more its right opposite the station in Whitby!

Yes, Grosmont is where the sheds are - a 5 minute walk through the former horse-drawn railway tunnel. There is a viewing gallery and you can get to see some of the stock, but not that stored further up the line.

Goathland does have an NYMR shop and a cafe, so there's something to occupy time in a stop-over.

Pickering also has a shop and cafe.

Levisham is just a small station (but a lot of trains meet here to pass, so you could use it for a change over), while Newton Dale Halt is exactly what it says on the tin.
