timetable & allocations for the forthcoming diesel gala is available:

A special timetable (v1.0 with allocations) will be in operation during this event, with locomotive allocations released closer to the event date.

Services are planned to run along the full length of our heritage line from Grosmont to Pickering, calling at Goathland, Newtondale Halt and Levisham Stations. NYMR services will NOT be running between Grosmont and Whitby during the event.

It is under repair and MAY appear - apparently 37418 is visiting instead. Same as last year which will annoy some people.

Great trip out to the NYMR diesel gala - i went on Saturday and it was not as busy as i feared it would be. We ended up with 3 x 37's working so that was fun. The 50 looked in good nick and the Deltic, when it ran, was obviously the star of the show!

Some good running despite a few problems: The Deltic broke down and the 33 was having problems.

The spotter wibble was that the Deltic was finished, had "flashed over" (?) and wouldn't be fit even for the KWVR gala next weekend yet it was back in action on Sunday.

The Deltic and the 50 should be on this - the 33 isn't due to appear at the KWVR (it was there 3 years ago).

LNER Teak coaches are still on the NYMR, currently stored out of use awaiting overhaul of running gear etc

37-688 is staying this season - back up for 31-128 on Whitby's as D7628 is out of traffic - though 37-688 has regularly been used on Pickering Grosmont working due to Fire Risk / lack of Steam Locos .

Flying Scotsman will be operating on the NYMR on 15 days between October 25 and November 12 - three return trips a day from Grosmont [08.45/11.40/15.00] to Pickering and back

I've noticed this year that there have been practically no corridor coaches in service on any of the trains. Has a specific decision been made to stop using them or is it just a coincidence that they're all out of service for maintenance at the same time? I'm guessing it's unlikely to be the latter.

Always my favourite way to travel.

Is it possible work is being done on the Mk1's to make them mainline compliant?

Alternatively, there was a shunting accident involving the Mk1 fleet, so perhaps remedial work is taking place on that fleet?

I think the poster means side-corridor (SK...) as opposed to open (TSO...).

That's pretty standard, as the effective capacity is higher - people will occupy a group of four or spread themselves over a compartment for 8...

The TSOs have a higher effective capacity, if people are standing. Also people are generally much happier sharing space in an open than being surrounded by strangers in a compartment.

A look at the coaching stock list on the NYMR website (not updated for several years!) indicates only about 10% of the stock of Mark 1 coaches are the side corridor type in any case, so with the greater flexibility of TSOs, I assume the latter are the preferred stock.

Yes, there was usually only ever one SK (apologies for not using the correct designation) in most rakes anyway and aside from those post-covid, Xmas specials they did (where everyone was allocated a seat), I don't think I've ever seen a regular service train running at anywhere remotely close to capacity, let alone with standing room only so the reasoning that they've been removed to raise capacity doesn't make much sense sadly.

Personally I think the inclusion of those coaches could be seen as important as it was once such a regular way to travel and all adds to the experience of pretending it's still the good old days for a couple of hours!

Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. The NYMR were getting bad reviews on the likes of Tripadvisor last year about people having to stand, as mentioned back in this thread.

Definitely been on a couple of very crowded service trains at the NYMR in the past couple of years. Usually the first Pickering to Whitby, and the departure from Whitby around 2pm.

In order to reduce operating costs, the NYMR Peak season timetable now has four trains to / from Whitby, compared to five in previous years, and outside the Peak season, they only operate five days a week instead of seven.
Thus - overcrowding on Whitby services was expected to increase, so the 48 seat CK in each Whitby rake was replaced by a 64 seat TSO. So, no compartments - and no First Class either
The NYMR has also sold one of its two passenger brake coaches that had compartments that was Network Rail registered - BSK 35089 has gone to the SRPS.
Two NYMR SK's are on long term hire to G/WR - but the three CK's, and a BCK are still on the line.

Do you mean at the NYMR? I assume either the carriage stable or in/around the shed at grosmont

I’m surprised no mention has been made of the huge moorland fire affecting the North Yorkshire Moors at the moment. Is there any suggestion at all that the steam railway was a factor in its igniting? Needless to say the NYMR are on diesel-ops only for the foreseeable, as this monster could burn for months now it’s got into the peat bogs.

I was just thinking about this the other day, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was one of their steam engines. Hopefully not however.

Apparently the fire has been getting quite close to raf flyingdales and closing roads, but I’m not sure if it will affect the traffic to the NYMR for the foreseeable

Being local, my understanding is the railway switched from steam to diesel traction to ensure the already stretched NY Fire and Rescue Service, farmers, game keepers and local contractors etc didn't have any more fires to deal with rather than because they were the cause.

Good to see the news on the other 2 visiting locos for the Gala next month. With Ivatt 41313 and Standard 4 80078 (will be renumbered to former Whitby loco 80119) coming to the railway. This on top of the other 2 visiting locos Standard 2mt 78019 and Battle of Britain Class 34072 257 Squadron. Looking forward to seeing a Standard 4 double header. Also seeing the 9f back in action after the prolonged Maintenance. Interesting to see the Q6 wont be back in time to operate.
