Well sadly in the not too far distant future the only vals will be grand central and the NMT lot so maybe It's worth trying to like them.
Lucky for me my fan base is the electrics mainly class 86's so I don't have to worry about that (just them setting on fire).

One of the things i dont like about the MTUs is the blandness of the start up, with the Valentas you get the low down roar, all of the mid tones of it when it's idling and then when it throttles up, the amazing high pitched scream. But with the MTUs it's just a noise, i find that there's just nothing special about it, it's just another noise.

You mean something like this? (Crank up the sound and bass for full effect)

Perhaps this is more to your taste.

I suppose to be fair, we do have to give MTUs a honourable mention.

If that first one had been on open track, I suspect it would have been even better. You can really hear the Marston going on that!

Liked that one of the MML power car too, quite enjoyable.

I've seen that MTU video before, it is proof that the MTUs can make noise. Something that's often moaned about, the lack of noise. The amount of noisy MTUs I've seen is getting more every time I go out on them.

Now time to read the rest of the thread since Monday's postings...

Just to take up this point, no doubt 43051 was in poor health generally because what's the point of maintaining something properly which is to be put into re-engineering?

Quite right.

Look out folks, I'm on a massive quoting spree so apologies if it gets hard to keep up!
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I don't mean to stir up trouble but I get the impression that some of you guy's don't consider a non-Valenta a HST worth riding at all which is quite a shame, yes we should honor the greatness of the Valentas but I think you shouldn't get too bogged down in the dislike of MTU's as this is merely another chapter in HST history.
I mean as of late I have been trying to see as much of the XC lot as I can because I missed XC Hst's back in Virgin days and well I tend not to be bothered about them being MTU'S.

If that was the case for me, I'd have not travelled much on HSTs at all this year.

As others have said, and I'll say again as the forum's resident HST crank, it's not the same with MTUs. Yes, it's keeping the HSTs going for a good few years yet. Heard all that before. But comparing 43002 with her Valenta (RIP S482) to her with her MTU, it's just not the same. She might be my pet power car, my machine, but I've not got the same desire to go out after her anymore.

Which has been about the same for all of the MTU'd power cars for me, I've had less desire to go out for them as the fun has gone. In 2007 I had 148 power cars for haulage in the year (I may have ended on more than that, but I've lost the book thus cannot check), which is roughly 3/4 of the fleet. In 2008, I've had about 110 (I should count them again, but that's a job for tomorrow) power cars for haulage for the year. Reason? A bit less going out but more so it all being MTU on GW the desire to get them in, to get them done and get them cleared for the magical thou has weakened. It'll be done, just I'm in no rush anymore. James will be able to tell you how much fun we had chasing after Valentas last year, I know I loved it.

You've summed up exactly how i feel.

I haven't seen any HSTs recently, which seems a little odd, but since they're likely to just be MTUs, im not at all bothered.
To sum up how much i like the various trains i see at Waverley;
43 Val/FSR 90 > 91 > 322/185 > 158/156/170/67/90 > 220/221 > 43 MTU

That is not the case, I would much rather travel on a HST than the vast majority of service trains nowadays regardless of the engine type, and agree that the MTU programme is/was much needed to extend their lifespan as much as possible. From purely an enthusiasts point of view I still far prefer the Valenta, but i'm not looking 'purely from an enthusiasts point of view'.

I still prefer to travel on a HST myself, a point I don't feel has been made clearly enough by myself. I agree the MTU programme was required, the power cars were absolutely knackered after over 3 decades of daily front-line service.

But likewise from a pure enthusiast view, the Valenta will always be preferred. After all, they are what sparked my interest in rail way back in September/October 2003. It's horrible to think that the vast majority of power cars back then were Valentas (with exception to a handful that were VP185s) and that MTU was unheard of. Now, over 5 years later, we're down to 10 power cars with Valentas and only 7 of those are on passenger trains. In those 5 years we've lost about 170 Valentas. Looked at like that, it's a rather sobering thought...:|

Yes, and in most cases I think people understand the importance of the re-engineering, but that doesn't mean we can't be sad about the loss of the Valentas ;) Hope that makes some sort of sense!

Makes perfect sense to me. Never had you down as a HST crank Jordy!

I agree, it is perfectly understandable that they didn't run a farewell - but it still would've been nice!

From a business point of view, maybe. From a PR view, no. Would have generated extra revenue from us HST cranks for the farewell (a simple out-and-back would have been enough). Even a specially-organised run didn't have to happen, advance notice that the last run with 43056 was to be the last one would have been good enough. It might have meant a scramble over to the east coast, but to get the final Valenta in would have been nice.

Sadly it proves my viewpoint that NXEC are not an enthusiast-friendly TOC and are just out to grab as much money as possible from passengers (and have the cheek to call us 'customers'!) through extortionate fares.

If all the AC locos (which by the look of your signature you like) had their engines replaced with the same type (making the same noise) as found in the Electric Desiros, would you not be slightly sad? No matter how much more reliable they would become...

That's something I'd like an answer to as well...
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I just find it funny how you have these hardcore HST fans but as soon as it becomes a MTU it is considered rubbish last time I checked fans stuck to their guns no matter what happens to the object of desire.

Look at the 57's in recent years these locos have proven they are just as good to watch as any 47 although not as heritage obviously my point goes out the window as this is a completely different class of loco but still it shows these MTU machine could show us all a good time.

From my viewpoint, it's like following a team that's in the Premiership, that gets relegated to the next league. You'd probably follow them still. They get relegated again to Division 2 (or whatever they call it at 7pm...). You start thinking it's not worth following them, but you still do the home games. Down to Division 3, it's every other home game. They end up in the Conference and you've lost interest in the team. You then decide you'll go to the game if it's at all convenient, but you won't drop everything to attend anymore.

As for the 57s, I didn't know them as 47s so it makes no difference to me. I don't mind the 57s, they're quite good.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I simply don't do non-valenta HST's because I don't rate them, I like the ones that are fitted for the noise or thrash which is obviously different to that on a VP or MTU and therefore consider bashing them a complete waste of my time. People seem to say these days that they'll be doing the EMT trams as it is VP's which still make noise, that is of no interest to me even if they do make noise, so do 31's and I hate them!

It's strange, I'm in the same boat with the EMT machines. They make a nice bit of noise and all that, but it's not the same. I don't go racing up there whenever I can for those ones now. Maybe in 2009 again, but it's quite the trek up there for those...

After decades of service the other operators (EMT & FGW) seem to have thought it would be a good idea to advertise the runs and make a special effort to do something to celebrate the end of the engines that have pounded the route they operate day in day out for many many years. I would have thought Nat Ex would have liked to have done the same, MML ran a tour taking in some rare HST track and raised money for charity which surely is worthwhile? I unfortunatly missed it as I was on holiday at the time...Come to think of it missed the FGW day as well as I was on a 37 tour, made the effort to be there for the last day of 002 in January though!

The EMT job was well worth supporting. I don't know if it was ever unveiled how much was raised at the end of the day, but it was a very enjoyable day supporting a good cause. Same for the FGW charity special to Minehead actually.

Can't remember you making an appearance on the final day of 43002.:| Where were you on it? PM me on this if you wish.

No, it makes a different noise no longer rateable, simple as. Theres plenty of 37 enthusiasts who won't do /9's.

Indeed, a nice and simple way of looking at it.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Rating engines/classes/anything is a bashing thing - photters just dont get it in my experience, and thats not supposed to be a dig just an observation. Suppose when you are standing on the platform/in a field you only get a quick blast and certainly don't gain the 'attachment' (of sorts) to a certain class and even individual locos/power cars/units.

It's an observation I'll echo, you don't get to enjoy the loco/unit/whatever much when you're linesiding. Which is part of the reason I don't bother with that much, it's nowhere near as much fun as actually travelling on it.

Of course, you do get the opportunity to get a nice photo of whatever it is you're out for, but I tend to see it as missed mileage opportunities.

You rate Voyagers over MTU'd HSTs? Interesting, as much as I like Voyagers I don't think I could ever rate them higher than a HST.

I just find the MTU'd HSTs dull. The part of the HST i loved has been removed and I just don't find them as interesting any more.
Oh, I still like them, just not as much.

I don't find them as interesting anymore either, a point on which I concur, but there's something still magical about HST travel.

That would be it then, I rarely travel by train (twice this year), I have no need to. I'm rarely outside Edinburgh, and when I am, I go by car, often because there's no line to where I'm going.

Yep I was there, originally meeting someone i know at Swindon who was coming to stay at mine for a Northern unit nedding day on the Friday and a booths visit on the Sat, changed my plans when I heard it was 002's last day so did the 0930 BHM - NWP with 170112 and then waited for the 1105 ex NWP (0915 ex PAD?) with 002 to CDF, got on the TGS at NWP behind the rancid cart (think it was 152 if the memory serves right) as i couldn't be bothered asking for free FC just into CDF, I'm sure you were in the TGS then? Then did a unit leap or two to QS before freeloading FC (with TM Permission) behind 002 on the 1155 ex CDF to the capital. Than managed a few more FC miles back to Swindon (1430 ex PAD, to Bristol???) to meet the good Cpt who was ex work from FGW's Ivory Towers, then had carts 148 & 155 to DPW for a unit to OXF for carts 176 & 142 forward to WSH and then a pair of 150's back to the home shack. So not a planned cranking day but more a in the area, last chance for FGW Valenta haulage and it would be rude not to etc. Anyway if you want the photographic evidence I was there heres one of 002 at CDF: http://seed08.fotopic.net/p51751070.html

I agree that HST's aren't as interesting anymore. Nor perhaps as imposing. I remember frequently entering the trainshed at Hull at around 6:45am, to be greeted by the familiar growl of the Valenta engine. As Hull only receives one outbound HST per day it was the only time to experience it close to home. It felt rather special in a way - that well known, fierce and grand sound had probably been heard by passengers entering the station at that time for decades. Sadly, that time is now over.

However, it is in my opinion still special, and a privilege, to travel on a HST, particularly the morning 'Hull Executive'. I always try to travel on it over a Northern or Hull Trains service. You board the train, close the door behind you with a slam, and relax in the surroundings of an unrefurbished mk3, sinking into one of those seats which seem to have endless amounts of padding. The despatcher whistles off the train (the only service which still requires a proper despatch from Hull due to the length of the train and the curvature of the platform), and enjoy the departure, which was of course even more exciting when a Valenta was on the train! The train winds its way through the inner-city and out into the suburbs, and you can see right the way to the front of the train as the tight curves are negotiated. Then the train blasts its way through the East Yorkshire countryside - it must look so fantastic externally to an observer, compared to the usual 158 or 170. I always feel like I'm on a special service when the train passes other stations, and you see the commuters waiting around for their little 2 car DMU. There's something much more romantic about the 0700 train to London. It's perhaps the last echo of a bygone era on the Hull line, and I shall most certainly be sad it go if it ever ceases to be HST operated.

Definetely is a sad time for Valentas although I will use GC as much as possible to get my fix.

On the subject of MTU's though, I still believe the older ones are getting better. For instance, a couple of months ago I got the 12:30 GC service from Sunderland and disembarked at Northallerton. In past experience, the GC gets moved on to the slow on departing Northallerton and an NXEC HST passes but this time the GC was about 2 down so the NXEC had been checked a bit further north, on waiting to see it pass I could have sworn it was a Valenta powering up until it got closer when I realised it was an MTU, still made a decent roar though so all hope isn't totally lost IMO.

Should have probably put an abbreviation alert in before this post as there are plenty!

I was indeed in the TGS, and we took the liberty of some free FC too on the 2245 PAD - SWA. I'll tell you what, it was unreal arriving on the last ever Valenta with FGW. Especially since it was my machine and Swansea was where I always started/finished many, many HST moves. So many memories...:(

Correct that 152 was the other power car to join 002 and that you joined the 0915 PAD - CDF. Well done for making the effort to come down for it though, there's not a lot of people who did.

Max: That's a brilliant account of the magic of HST travel. I feel the same when I arrive/leave Hereford on a HST, although we get more HSTs than you do in Hull. Back in the day it was great when a Valenta turned up. I remember one morning last year in particular with 43187+005. 187 was being particularly showful, clagging and screaming like a monster and we had an amazing run with it. I certainly didn't want to get off at Worcester, but I was already heading to Derby and had to.

But you're right, it's so much nicer on runs like the HUL - KGX where you pass through all the little shacks and not put up with a 2-car DMU. Just a shame when you get a Mallard set now. Nice as those are, I had a fully unrefurbished set on Tuesday night on 1B75 1818 ABD - EDB, a rare event these days, especially since I won't be on NXEC until January now.

90019: Fair enough that. I spend far too much time travelling by train, wouldn't want to travel by car.

I wouldn't say that exactly though because as the saying goes "villa till I die" for the Aston villa fans around here who would get annoyed about getting taken down a few leagues but would never lose interest.
Obviously I know that Vals are far more superior but here my ultimate question.

What you guys gonna do once all the vals are gone??????

Go cry in a corner, of course!

Seriously? Nothing, really. Once they're all gone, they're all gone, and there's not really much you can do about it. There will always be other things :)

Fair enough.
No offense but with the passion the valenta lovers display I only imagine their lives to be a lot less meaningful without them.

They've some dedication then if they'd put up with their team being relegated or whatever all the time. Fair play to that.

Absolutely no idea. I guess Voyagers will go up in the league. It'll be hard to fill the void to begin with, it was extremely difficult to get used to that much on GW. How I got through over 4 months without getting on a HST with a Valenta on it I just do not know.

I'll probably still do HSTs until the very last day of HSTs on the mainline, but I just won't have the same enthusiasm anymore. I suspect I'll be on more railtours and/or doing required track to fill in the Baker as much as possible. It'll all be waiting for the day 125 Group get a HST in preservation, then I see much time spent helping with that. Hopefully it'll be soon after that when it gets onto a tour on the mainline. Which I guarentee you now, I'll be on it. No matter where it's going to, where it's starting from or what route it takes. I will be there.

Anyway, the thought of no more Valentas is a rather depressing thought, I'm going to stop thinking about it. You can guess I'm going to be on GC HSTs as much as possible next year!

We're passionate alright, we know what we like.

Some of these photos I've taken will hopefully show just how passionate I get when it comes to Valentas, particularly my machine:

I give my favourite traction a salute at Reading, not long before stepping on board with 43003 on 29th December 2007.

To be honest I'm stupidly passionate when it comes to class 86's yes they are quiet and don't excite people but when I see them dim middle lights coming towards me I always panic.
But also I would be quite sad the day they stop running them as they have always meant a lot to me.
So I kind of take my feelings towards 86's and just guess how you guys feel about HST's.

Quite, I don't understand the passion people show for 86s, but that's because I'm not keen on them. What's more important is that we enjoy what we're passionate about.

Agree totally, and for me, all is not lost when I think of newer traction. I was gutted (although quite young) when Transpennine lost the 47's to the 158's but I ended up being quite fond of them. Then again, I was a little bit sad when the 158's went in favour of the 185's. In fact, I hated them at first but over the last couple of years they have grown on me. I could possibly now say that they are my favourite DMU, especially when you steadily leave a station then join the mainline and the driver gives it the beans.

I have decided that as of today, if I am going to have to like MTU's, I will firstly adopt 43318. Saw it leaving Durham earlier this evening and it certainly is one of the better ones.

Thought I would put a link to this vid of it, doesn't particiularly perform that well here, seems to have matured with the short age and also gets drowned by the valenta on the back but the vid is worth watching all the same, even for the multi-multi-tone. Was there a hint of wheelslip at the back as well?

Yeah talking a new stuff I have found myself becoming quite fond of the class 350's I used to dislike them alot and now they have booted most 321's of the WCML I should actually hate them but they seem nice and tick the boxes.
They sound nice.
They Look nice.
Fast.
And comfy (but cold)

I've liked the 350s since they started in service, although there's always been better about. That's now changed considerably and there's not much left that's rateable in the Midlands.

Depends on what you consider rateable really cause honestly I don't mind the odd 323 travel or even hop into the 153 from Brum to Bescot (obviously attached to a 170)
Yes the variety has defiantly died down but at least we got the HST's on a more permanent basis and the 321's haven't completly dissapeared from the area.
Plus we are supposed to be getting these XC 153's,the PPM,and the class 172.
So the variety should go up soon.
But to think about 13 years ago it used to be.

323 = 310,312,304
170 = 150,156,158,153
350 = 321 (Not exactly correct but almost)

Indeed, but when I say most of the ratable stuff has gone, I'm talking of course about the 87s and 90s on VWC jobbies and HSTs with proper engines. Back in the days of VWC loco haulage, it was worth making the effort to go up there for them, same for the Valentas. All that's much good at all now, in my eyes, would be:

321s (when you can get them!)
323s (I love the noise they make when they take off!)
350s (that Desiro noise tickles me somewhat, plus on a hot day the air-con is fantastic)
Voyagers (not most people's cup of tea, but I love 'em)
XC HSTs (it might be all German inside the power cars, but it's better than nowt)
Pendolinos (an odd comment you might think considering my above comments about VWC loco haulage, and whilst they're not the first thing I'll go for, there's something about them I like. Probably the tilt)

TBH, most of that just isn't worth making a special trip to the Midlands. I might not live that far from Birmingham, but I'd rather make the effort to go down to the Western.

You might notice I've deliberately not included WSMR 67s above, but that's because they're a PITA to get onto if you're at New Street, Wolverhampton or Banbury. That and they're not exactly amazing anyway (IMO). Yes you can pick them up at Tame Bridge Parkway, Cosford or something, but it's more hassle than it's worth (again, IMO) to get the lines in the book.

I defiantly agree with what your saying.
From a purely photographic standpoint I would say it is one of the best areas to be in as a lot of action happens around the area.
For instance in the space of Wednesday evening and Thursday morning I managed to see 3 class 47's so I am always happy when photting in the WM.

But hopefully maybe the rail scene in the area may change somewhat because as I have come to realized a vast amount of good can happen in a year.
To be honest I see loco haulage making abit more of it's presence felt whether it's in the Birmingham area is too be seen but I will carry on crossing my fingers.

In all fairness, loco haulage has made a nice comeback this year, even if only temporary in places (GC 47/67s for instance). Things like these 57s with ATW and 67s with FGW are a welcome initiative, indeed the 67s on the Fife Circle are also welcome!

See this is what I mean that even though some has been on a temp basis some new services have become a mainstay I mean last year we went from (as far as I know) only NXEC,NXEA (plus sleeper service and hst's) being the only loco hauled but now we have.

WSMR
ATW
FGW
XC

Plus next year the EMT 47's will be back on their summer duites.
