The only reasonable walk-up price I've ever seen on an NXEC train is the Glasgow Central/Queen Street-London Terminals Off Peak Return, and that's only because it's a Virgin priced ticket. In fact, the Edinburgh-London Terminals Super Off Peak Return is about the same price, despite being 50 miles further away than Glasgow (assuming you travel via the ECML).

I've not experienced any problems with this company. When delayed, the information is always good, and it's never been the fault of the TOC. The have always staff have always been friendly and very helpful (and, before you start, this isn't just Scottish traincrews I'm talking about).

And as for the barriers; I don't see why NXEC can't stick a few barriers at the "NRM exit", but otherwise I support this move for revenue protection. Scotrail use it at all their major stations without any problems; they certainly work better than the people standing about who, in my experience, rush through the ticket examination because of the crowds of people pushing towards them.

Actually the reality is that the fares from London to Glasgow/Edinburgh were harmonised in the days of InterCity and they are identical now (£108.80) for the equivalent product on each route, however NXEC re-named the Saver as Super Off Peak on routes via London and the Business Saver became Saver. The Off Peak ticket on the ECML is effectively an Anytime from Edinburgh/Berwick, which is £271 from Glasgow. At the end of the day though for walk-on fares, Virgin are generally more expensive except if travelling from London to Scotland/Wales and particularly so at peak times.

I am sure the £108.80 fare for EDB/GLC must be set centrally and not individually by each TOC, whatever Avantix says, as it's been the same for many years.

If Virgin are cheaper than NXEC, why is it so much cheaper for a day trip to London from Peterborough (and even Grantham!) than it is for Rugby?

Manchester to London is £247 if going back at, say 17:00, but from York (further north) it is only £129.90 to do the same.

Not that I am praising National Express - they inherited these fares.

They are putting barriers but there's no ticket office there so people wanting rovers/rangers/combinations of tickets/seasons/PRIV/various other discounts have to walk a very long round which is unacceptable. Also cyclists/motorcyclists have to walk a long way round which is also unacceptable. York is not a suburban station and should not need to be treated as such!

Ever been to Glasgow Queen Street? North Hanover Street entrance to Low Level lines is for ticket holders only. On exit, sales are only available at peak times. No problem up here, and there is a considerable walk to the ticket offices if you want to buy tickets.

I'm sorry, but I do not agree with you on this one. Revenue protection is important and this is a small price to pay. If you want to purchase rovers, season tickets or what not, walk around to the main ticket office.

I don't understand why bikes can't get through, though. Can you explain this, as I would agree that that's not fair.

I'm thinking about Glasgow here. As far as I can see, fares from Scotland to the North of England are a rip off. I can think of plenty of people who would want to go to Newcastle or York or Durham for the day, but can't because there are no Off Peak Day Returns (CDRs). They have to pay the much more expensive Off Peak Returns (Savers). And all these places are perfectly feasible for day trips.

On the West Coast, you can get CDRs as far as Preston from Scotland. My maps show that Preston is actually further south than York. NXEC's fares put people off daytrips to Newcastle, York and Durham, 3 pretty decent cities, because they have to buy in advance or pay the absolutely insane Off Peak Return fare.

And, whilst Newcastle is easily reachable by splitting tickets at Carlisle, this option will not be commonly known about, and the people will not want to change when a direct service is available.

Im 18, i can just about call myself an adult now, yet i feel judging by the comments posted by some members on here, I would assume young children use this site too (or just really childish grown-ups) and I think too many people are stuck in the past. If GNER was so great, then where are they now? Personally, I dont think NXEC are doing that bad of a job, and from my expreiances with them, I prefer them over GNER. They have gotten rid of that rather 'out-dated' livery, and brought in a much fresher, more modern livery. Ive noticed improved punctuality on their services that i have used, over that of GNER, and i see the free wifi in standard as a bonus. Ive never had any problems with their staff, and even if i did, i wouldnt hate the company as a result of it, I would just make a complaint. If someone does not like the service that NXEC provides, then why not just sign the petition? A petition to IMPROVE their services? Would that not make more sence?? Im going to sign it after i post this
Also, I agree that if NX do lose their franchises, I wouldnt think the next TOC would do any better.

There are a lot of kids on here that do act their shoe size. I think the mods and some of the maturer members do try their best to knock some common sense into them but there are some people who are just in lala world when it comes to reality. A mass handback of franchises is not good for the industry.
