Maybe this is one of the reasons why NXEC may have to give up the East Coast Franchise...
http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/NXECservice/

A petition to make NXEC give a better service. I am not sure whether I should sign it or not as I kind of want them out...

May I also remind all to sign the SELRAP petition to reopen the Skipton - Colne Railway Line. The address is at the bottom. Any questions about SELRAP ask me or ask on this thread...
http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/reopen/

Thanks...

NXEC should, at a minimum, restore service levels to what they were at the beginning of their franchise.

Erm, I wasn't aware that NXEC had cut any services. :? Also, what about the planned timetable changes from December that sees 5 trains an hour to/from London verses the current 4 trains an hour?

All in all, I think it's (yet) another bull**** petition.

'Service' refers in this case to on-board service I believe (ie. cutbacks to the restaurant provision).

NXEC are an awful company who show contempt for their customers, but I still travel with them as their AP fares are about a third of the cost of travelling with GC (:(), but I really don't like travelling with NXEC any more compared to GNER. At least you get a table to yourself easily on the 2030 off Kings Cross now - that train used to be wedged in GNER days but most of the passengers have been driven away.

I heard that was because they put on more services in the evening? Or am I making that up?

Am I the only one who doesn't get the logic of this statement ?

Presumably you want NXEC to improve their service offering, therefore it would make sense to sign. If you're saying you won't sign because you want them removed from the franchise, then I suspect you'll be out of luck. Not least because I can't see too many other companies who'll take this on.

The only serious contenders will be:

Virgin
Stagecoach
First

GoVia won't get it, because they've not run an IC franchise, nor will NedSerco - same reason.

As for nationalisation - forget it.

As had been said elsewhere when people like you have posted this stupid remark - why? It would be a bad thing for them to go for god's sake!

That is such a terrible thing to say. They're not that bad. And if you want services to get worse, do you want the people who use the line frequently to suffer as a result?

You've got to love the selfishness of some of the people on here.
They're quite happy for people who travel on the ECML to suffer with a worse service simpy because they don't like the company running the franchise.
I'm sorry, but that's just wrong.
Not as bad as those who want NX gone because they don't like the livery, I'll grant you that. but it's still not a good thing.

You honestly want service for passengers to get worse service because you don't like NX?
Frankly, that's an idiotic, selfish, arrogant and childish way to think.

90019 - I agree with you 100%.

To those writing the stupid comments about NXEC (or any other operator for that matter) you might like to reflect on why rail enthusiasts get a bad press.......

i agree too, sadly the railways are ran for the passengers so we have to put up with what they want like it or not, thats why we have pendolinos, voyagers and MTU`s because it improved the service for passengers

As I've said before, the railways are not there for enthusiasts, that's merely a bonus of it, so you should be happy with what you've got, becasue if people manage to get rid of NX, I can almost guarantee that whoever comes next will offer a worse service.

Honestly, I'm both amazed and appalled by the views of some of the people on this forum.

"PENDOLIONS" Hmmm, I know Virgin's trains run near London Zoo, but I didn't realise they'd escaped from there

So you'd like an enthusiast run railway, with lots of "hellfire" rolling stock like 37s and Valentas that'll be unreliable (if not now, then not far into the future; they are getting old!) and slower for passengers, but as long as we have things to flail at.

Exactly, TOCs will try and improve things for the customer, rail enthusiasts are not their business, people travelling on their services are.

Although, I'm a little unsure on whether Pendos really are that big an improvement for the passengers, because, as has been said many a time, they don't really seem designed for standard class passengers, with their small windows meaning that the view out is much reduced for many, and considering the line they travel down, this could be considered a disadvantage over previous trains.
However, having yet to travel on a Pendo, I'm going to reserve judgement on that one until I have.

Speaking as both a passenger and an enthusiast, I've travelled MK - Stoke / Manchester on both Pendos and the "old" stock (Mk2s & loco).

Personally, I prefer the Pendos - the seats are more comfortable (which is a personal thing), I prefer the environment of the Pendos and reckon they ride better. Also you can feel the tilt through places like Rugeley.

Accept the visibility out of the windows isn't as good, but it's outweighed for me by the other improvements the Pendos have brought.

As someone who, though looking fondly at some of our past treasures, is fully supportive of modernisation, I feel as though I have to defend NXEC to some extent - even if fares are extreme on occasions. At the end of the day, the TOC's have to make the whole thing work financially. GNER tried it, it didn't work, however polite the staff were in the first class lounge. NXEC are having a go now, let's give them a chance. They are being expected to offer more services to new destinations with the highest level of competition on the network. In the end, if they are not good enough, passengers have the choice to switch allegiance. First Capital Connect, Hull Trains, Grand Central, Cross Country, TransPennine Express - a formidable list of competitors and, with more Grand Central services and possibly even Harrogate Trains, the amount of competition is growing AND if GC plans come to fruition, ALL of NXEC's competitors will have more modern rolling stock by 2010. And modern is what the passengers want!

And, perhaps controversially, I think NX livery suits the HST!

Such a mature attitude. Don't be a prat.

I'm sure they'd run for you if you so desired - you'd just have to get your chequebook out.

well NXEC are better and cheaper (and only slightly longer) than EMT for Nottingham-London (mind you have to use EMT to get to Grantham)

Looks like Branson still fancies having the ECML as well if NXEC can't continue.

Personally, I've found the NXEC has somewhat improved since the GNER days. More advance tickets available, free wifi in standard, and fewer major delays/cancellations. I also like the new livery, and think that ticket barriers at their major stations is a good thing.

Im 18, i can just about call myself an adult now, yet i feel judging by the comments posted by some members on here, I would assume young children use this site too (or just really childish grown-ups) and I think too many people are stuck in the past. If GNER was so great, then where are they now? Personally, I dont think NXEC are doing that bad of a job, and from my expreiances with them, I prefer them over GNER. They have gotten rid of that rather 'out-dated' livery, and brought in a much fresher, more modern livery. Ive noticed improved punctuality on their services that i have used, over that of GNER, and i see the free wifi in standard as a bonus. Ive never had any problems with their staff, and even if i did, i wouldnt hate the company as a result of it, I would just make a complaint. If someone does not like the service that NXEC provides, then why not just sign the petition? A petition to IMPROVE their services? Would that not make more sence?? Im going to sign it after i post this :p
Also, I agree that if NX do lose their franchises, I wouldnt think the next TOC would do any better.

Apart from the free wifi, I'd disagree with all of that.

As for delays/cancellations, I can't think of any that have been the fault of the TOC - not that I've experienced anyway.

The payments to government were getting too large. That, combined with the demise of the parent company Sea Containers, meant it was the end for GNER. If you honestly think that NXEC are different and are going to actually pay the premiums they have comitted to then that's something we have to agree to disagree on!

The NXEC deal, like GNERs, becomes impossible to maintain after a few years because the sums of money to be paid to the Government are just too high.

I'd disagree with that. I've found it easier to travel, and much cheaper on NXEC than with Virgin to Glasgow and York, especially more so than Virgin when going to Glasgow. Advance tickets stick around for longer, and the only delays and cancellations that have occured on the route that were their fault are full-blown train failures and a staffing issue once, that was solved by a nice TM offering to work the service back and forgo his PNB for a double length one once arrived in at Newcastle.
