Pretty much what driver said.

Glasgow Central-Cambuslang-Uddingston-Motherwell (avoiding Bellshill)-Carstairs (Avoiding Wishaw)-Kirknewton-Haymarket-Edinburgh Waverley.

Calls only at the stations in bold.

. . . . and its almost quicker to walk thru Carstairs! The linespeed round the sharp bend at Carstairs junction (and the station) is (I think) 15mph on the junction and 30 thru the station.
Its an intersting junction.
Its notable that this point on the line is further South than Berwick, but the southbound train will take at least an hour and a half to get there!
I recall NXEC staff once asking "why do we come here?".
a good question, eh?

I take it Glasgow Queen Street's platforms aren't long enough for a 225? If they are you might be able to argue for NXEC services terminating there once the line from Edinburgh has been electrified...

Used to be HSTs in Queen Street believe it or not(!). They used Platform 7 I think. P7 is quite long (longest in the station by far), but the HST was too long and "hung off" the end.

People constantly moan about NXEC's Carstairs farce. But the passengers conveyed from Motherwell to Edinburgh, in my opinion, justify a train running that way. The peak time services are well loaded, and many East Coast travellers like to use Motherwell. Furthermore, there'd probably be an outcry if Newcastle in particular lost the direct Glasgow service.

HSTs used to use platforms 2, 6, and 7 at Glasgow Queen Street, depending on time of day

The early morning was able to use Platform 2 as it simply arrived and departed without affecting any outgoing services

The first evening one HAD to use platform 6 as there would be an Aberdeen in Platform 7

The last evening one would use platfrom 6 or 7, depending on where the final Aberdeen arrival had ended up
Normally though it would also use platform 6

A 225 set could use Glasgow Queen Street, but it would almost certainly block the entrance!
I can remember a 9 car HST arriving at Glasgow Queen Street (included a locked off TF for movement to Craigentinny) with the final power car right at the tunnel mouth, making it "almost" impossible to get the number!

But that's not a full length passenger train; it's a few coaches shorter. All the passenger ones out there (with the possible exception of GC) wouldn't be able to fit into the platforms as far as I'm aware without the overhang.

I read an article that they're planning a major upgrade to QS, including extending the platforms.

Yes, I saw that as well. They plan to have it "airport style" which, as I understand it, means that the platforms will be extended as far towards George Square as possible, with the concourse being on an upper level. Either that or a new building to the side of the existing terminal (probably at the North Hanover Street exit). There may also be the potential for more platforms to be constructed.

It's an essential task; QS is getting busier and the layout is very restrictive.

EDIT: Article here. Some rather bitter comments.

Interesting article. Does anyone have any artists impressions?
