Has anyone got any idea what charges will be occurred for std class passengers - as I have heard roomers that the 1st class coaches will be free but the others will have to pay something very expensive?


Will you be using it if you have to pay?

I would hope, and assume, that it will be free. If one can recieve free wi-fi in McDonalds, there is no reason why National Express shouldn't be able to provide that service free too.

I thought today when I read this finally they're investing in something really worthwhile and decent to improve the franchise after years of little investment in a franchise which they paid high premiums for.

Then I realized that actually didn't cough up anything and are making the local councils pay for something because as per usual they are still doing the penny pinching they have done from day one with zero investment.It's good news but they really should be paying for it themselves.

I used to use NXEA every day from the time they took over, a few years previous and up until two years after, when I got fed up with everything and took a job elsewhere so I didn't have to face the daily torture of a commute. When I do have to use them now I only use First Class and book well in advance, as to me standard class isn't a nice place to be with that awful refurb and no facilities at all.

I would pay for it in standard class if either the standard class prices were lower or the standard of on-board environment was better.

But right now the prices for standard class are a rip-off for what is not a very comfortable experience with nothing to offer the passenger.

To be honest, Virgin charge in STD and free in 1ST too.. so it's not as it they're alone.

And if I was in standard, I wouldn't pay for it. I would stick to using the 3G on my phone. If it was free, I would, for the benefit of faster speeds. But as others have said, I wouldn't pay for something I can get for free in Mc Donalds.

What happens if you were travelling in STD at the end of the carriage next to 1ST Class - I wonder if it would class you as being in 1ST and therefore not asking you to pay????????

Not worth the try though - I would prefer a seat!.

Well back when GNER charged STD, you could board in 1ST, connect, walk through to STD and continue to get it free.

On the subject of Wi-Fi, which trains actually have it these days?
I know FGW and XC were planning it a long time ago, but they seem to have ditched the idea.
So is it only East Coast and Virgin Pendolinos that have it? And have Virgin fitted it on Voyagers yet?

It's ruinous in std on Virgin, just as it was with GNER. Really not worth it. Pitch the cost lower, and I'd consider it (if I ever find myself on that route)

It is available on Virgin Voyagers, yes, same arrangement as with the Pendolinos except for one important little quirk

I would depend how much it is in Standard. I know for a fact that people used to travel first class because of the free wi-fi, A case of £20 for standard class, £30 for first class and I get free wi-fi, coffee etc. Worth the extra.

The problem with NXEA is the short journey time, people may not want to pay for such short journey times. Many will have 3G cards so will use them instead. XC are onto a winner here as your 3G card probably won't work!

I think times have moved on from having wi-fi fitted and people are increasingly using 3G which from my experience is more reliable and allows you to avoid those damned annoying login pages where you have to register before you can use the wifi.

Some modern trains such as the voyager & pendo have got the 3G card covered. The faraday cage effect on these trains seems to do a good job at blocking out all mobile signals. Although to be fair to Virgin they have invested money in putting mobile transmittors inside thier trains to mitigate this. Shame XC haven't, unless you want to avoid mobile phone users that is. I agree however I would rather use the 3G card than wi-fi because of the faster access times.
