Evening all, just a quick one.
Been watching the 317's roll past college day after day, then I couldn't think where on earth they are allocated to!
I know there is a couple of sidings at Bishops Stortford, and a set of sidings/small depot shared with FCC north of Cambridge. But a quick Wiki shows they have 60 units and can't all fit in there.
I've travelled Cambridge to Liverpool Street and I'm thinking through the route but puzzled!
Cheers :)

All allocated to Ilford.
Chingford and Cambridge are the main outstabling locations with a few others elsewhere as mentioned by others.

Hertford East used to stable trains as it also used to be a driver/guard depot back in BR days.

Went there a few months ago, station needs a facelift urgently!!!!

Ahhh ok then, cheers. Does that mean they run some of the peak services in the morning rush from Chingford?

The Orient Way stabling point is just north of the new Eurostar depot on the east side of the Lea Valley line. Built to replace Thornton Fields which is now buried under the Olympic site.

Ware College...?

NXEA are allocated to Ilford for maintenance but can be stabled at quite a few places. Orient Way is only used for Cl317's at night, but they can be stabled at various places during the day, including Ilford. Don't be fooled by what looks like "a few sidings", places like Cambridge can hold a huge number of units.

How many units can Cambridge hold if you include the yard AND the bay platforms?

Can't answer that as I don't sign the carriage sidings. But the yard is in two parts, plus there's the two wired reception roads and, if you need to, the Up and Down Goods roads too.

At Cambridge you've got 1 and 2 reception which is next to the Up Goods through the station so there your talking roughly 12 or 14 units.
At the Carriage sidings there is the headshunt and the Arrival plus 1 - 5 CS
So your talking roughly 22 units there.
Behind the wash road there is 6-8 Carriage sidings. At a guess these will hold 6 units but i might be wrong and its 9.
So Cambridge could hold 40 to 45 units.Thats not using platforms
The Arrival is normally kept clear for XC to the Diesel Depot if the Main is blocked.

I rode one in 2008 from Waltham Cross to Liverpool Street that I think had started ffrom Hertford East. They also work Stansted Express and Cambridge services. Furthermore, in July I rode one from Enfield Lock to Stratford. Sadly I had trouble locating a class 317 with FCC at King's Cross that morning.

So Cambridge is quite busy and it's getting even more busier with the 379s arriving as well, it's a pity the yard at Hertford East is in it's current state as it might have helped provide some stabling capacity.

How many units was the yard when it was operational capable of handling?

No idea but it'd be of next to no use now anyway. If anything was to be done you'd want more stabling capacity at the London end, bringing back Aldersbrook or Enfield would be better.

They are going to build the Crossrail Tunnelling Academy on the Aldersbrook sidings.

...also the carriage sidings at Hertford East have been lifted and no connection exists to the running lines, and those at Enfield Town are similarly non-existant.

I have heard that Bombardier are to move their facilities out of Ilford depot and turn A and B Shop over to Cl379 maintenance. We shall see.
