NUT strike action

a mixture of two things this really, firstly, a poll to say if you think school teachers should be entitled to a pay rise, and also, if you would like to talk about how it affects your school (if you go to school!) or if you are a parent. Thought I'd do this as my mum is a Secondary KS3,4,5 English and Drama teacher, and will be taking strike action tomorrow (which is good, both get the day off 8)).

I think it varies - there are some rubbish teachers, and some 'middle managers' who spend their life dreaming up idiotic schemes with no use whatsoever, yet get paid a small fortune. Equally, there are some very good teachers, a lot of unpaid overtime happens within education, perhaps it is something to do with the job, but really they ought to get good renumeration for that.

What would be worse than teachers striking is if support staff went out, as it only takes a couple of them to go and the school must close.

Yes so getting less education will help you pass your exams or tests.

I think I got what you said, but I don't get what that has to do with teachers going on strike. But they do have the right to answer back, its just the punishment is there if they do.

My School is shut for Lower School pupils, but open for Senior school students so i still have to go in, only one of my lessons is cancelled

ohh I see - yeah! Most recent thing I can remember was when a chav threw an insult to a girl (think it was 'get a life') in biology once, she immediatley turned around and said 'get a dick' to this lad unfortunately for her, the teacher was right next to her, but I suppose she laughed too!

They do have a lot of stress from each school day, but whats the point in striking when GCSEs are just round the corner?

Teachers are in there coz it's a job, and whilst part of their job is to get pupils through exams, they also need to make ends meet with rates of inflation!
If it had been September/October, the strike would have probably struck for more than one day, but as it's April, they know they have responsibilites for exams.

I think 'chav' is too general a term.

There are so many different types of people I find it hard to just label it under 'chav'.

There are alot of people where, if they ran into trouble with youths with hoods they would be 'chavs'.

Anyway, i'm digressing. Suppose it's good for teachers to strike, but it's not like every other job is above the rate of inflation....

It's people like me who I feel sorry for. I have A levels next month, and a lot of year 11 and year 10 have GCSE Exams coming up as well next week. It's just a tad funny that my Biology Teacher happens to be the person to call the strikes in my school as he's head of the NUT!!

Sadly, I have to go in today No strikes north of the border.

I agree with their strike; there's a lot of schools out there where they have to put up with a lot and they are paid so little. Even a tiny rise can boost morale to some extent.

I do not agree with the strike, however. It's not fair on the pupils (who, really, are the only reason non-independent schools run) and can only deteriorate the quelity of education. Why should the pupils suffer for the teachers to earn a bit more money?

Part of the point of the protest is that the rates of pay currently on offer are not sufficient to ensure recruitment and retention of new teachers.

I have to say that I believe teachers deserve a respectable rise. What generally isn't seen is just how much unpaid overtime has to go into the job in order just to fulfil the basic requirements of the post. "Her Nibs" calculated that she has been working at least half as many hours again as she is contracted for every year since she qualified in 1994.

But it all comes down to the fact that if teaching is a profession then you are expected to work a 'professional contract 'i.e. the number of hours required to complete the job'. The government has taken the urine out of this and the professionalism of most public sector professions for several years now sadly. They know that staff will work as long as they think they need to to do the job properly and yet set the 'minimum hours' as the contracted number.

I think teachers deserve at least inflation/RPI (anything else is a pay cut).

I was in London today with Mum (she's again flying to her cousins rather than getting the train......such a traiter!) and as soon as we exited Waterloo we saw Waterloo Road at a stand, with bus routes that normally run on the 'wrong' side of the river trying to get through the traffic. We walked up to the Imax roundabout where we saw that Waterloo Bridge had been closed northbound, with the only thing being let through the cordon being the route 521 bendy-buses that use the Strand Underpass. So we trudged up over the bridge and ahead we saw the slow walk march proceeding from the Fleet Street/Aldwych direction onto the Strand. One van driver tooted at them and they all cheered thinking he was supporting them. He then lowered his window and said something along the lines of "That [insert interesting word here]'ing beep wasn't support - you're all blocking half of central London! Alright you having a day off but my job involves delivering things down roads I can't [insert interesting word here]'ing get down because of you bunch of whiners!"
