A man and his dog were struck and killed on a foot crossing. Due to the time and darkness, the train that hit them was NOT aware, the grim sight was discovered later and 3 trains were stopped to examine their trains who could have hit it. All my sympathies go to victim, family and friends and all of the emergency services and employees who have had to deal with it.
Warning - some grim gallows humour coming, DO NOT read further if offended by this type of thing.
When searching the body for ID, the Police found evidence that he was actually a fare dodger. They found he had an expired rover.

Seems to be something of a tragedy if the man was caught unawares, and indeed if that is the case it does raise a number of questions.

The crossing is around a corner as regards to trains from New Street. We'll see what the investigation turns up, as for the comment regarding the gallows humour, you didn't have to read it, which was specifically why the warning was written. This is one of my core routes, and I know the driver involved.

Sometimes people make jokes to cope in such situations, for example if mumrar was said driver his way of getting by without breaking down into a lump of nothing would be to joke about it.
plus noone made you read the joke, and the joke was at the dogs expense not the man

How would having a expired rover mean he is a fare dodger?
Was he actually traveling before he was hit?

He may have got off a train on which he travelled using the expired rover.
Or, it's merely gallows humour and the police didn't find an 'expired rover' (the ticket, not the dog)

Can I just back up mumrar here.
I've seen a suicide. I was working on the tracks about 150m north of Cricklewood station a few years back. Watching the train coming through at 85mph with my hand cheerily in the air and smiling at the driver, I then watched a man jump off the platform in front of the train with obvious results.
As I was the COSS (Controller of Site Safety) of the workgroup, I made the emergency call. I helped the ambulance staff down onto the track as the MOM hadn't arrived yet, and watched the (newly qualified - not a great start!) paramedic lady have to suppress vomit.
I know it was traveling at 85mph because I attended the coroners court to give my witness evidence. I know the mans name. I met his family. I know a lot about him and the possible reasons why he did it.
That's a memory that I will never be able to get rid of. It was over 3 years ago, and I can (and often do) still recall the man jumping, as clear as if it was yesterday.
So, in support of mumrar, horrible as it is, there are only two ways for your mind to get out of that - joke about it, or get very depressed. I took the joke route. We were walking around Cricklewood sidings later in the day and we were laughing about what would have happened if he had hit different types of train, especially the voyagers/meridians with their sticking out couplings. We joked about the whole incident a lot, probably more that we should have done, but it was the only way to deal with it.
