Work is starting on Nuneaton station footbridge. Murphy have set up a site camp in the station car park and lots of scaffolding has been erected over the past couple of weeks. This last weekend they had a total possession and more scaffolding was erected over the main lines. Does anybody have more details for the works and what we can look forward to once the works are completed.

If it’s major work the local authority planning application site might cover it?

I wouldn't get overly excited, just a re-furb I think. There is another weekend block this coming weekend too.

This weekend its only Sunday that the block is on, its normal service through Nuneaton on Saturday from what I've seen on Avanti and National Rail websites.

I keep dreaming that one day they will build a magic extension off the end of it and straight out to KFC additional northern entrance for the benefit of passengers :p

Hope I'm not drifting too far off topic.
On the occasions I've visited Nuneaton the best spot I've found is the southern end of Plat 1, just past the bike racks.
Great for everything except some phots or wagon numbers.
Two things that are missing (not just for rail enthusiasts but also for Joe Public) are -
1. A decent buffet. Used to be one years ago with old railway photos on the wall - on the left as you enter plat 1 from booking hall. That was replaced by some arty-farty type buffet which probably closed for lack of trade.
2. Toilets! The only toilets are on plat 2 approx opposite where the tampers etc. are usually stabled.

Current usage of station is as follows -
plat 1 - Coventry shuttle
Plat 2 - Euston-Crewe stoppers
Plat 3 - Down express
plat 4 - Up express
plat 5 - Crewe-Euston stoppers
plat 6 & 7 Cross country

A sensible future layout of facilities could include the following;
Change old buffet on plat 1 into toilets (the plumbing is already there!).
Re-model the toilets on plat 2 with entrance from both plats and add a small/medium sized buffet.
Add both toilets and a larger buffet to plats 4/5.
Add a toilet to either plat 6 or 7 near the footbridge. Buffet not really necessary here due to only 30min travel time to either B'Ham or Leic.

Anyone with any other thoughts?

Nuneaton is one of my all time favourite stations. I was born in Nuneaton and live in nearby Hinckley. I didn't notice that that newer buffet was closed. Whenever I went it rarely was open. Pre Covid I noticed that this station has got much busier in recent years. I am sure there used to be toilets on the north end of Platform 2/3 years ago? Its a shame the fast Avanti ,(ex Virgin) trains dont call-Apart from a few peak hour ones.this station is hard to beat for freight action! :)

Ah yes that was definitely a brilliant little buffet too, the proprietor, Derek was a real friendly chap, it was a sad day for Nuneaton and the rail enthusiast community when he shut up shop, the arty farty buffet (as beautifully put by yourself :lol:) on Platform 1 is shut due to Covid.

Of note, there was also once a cafe on Platform 5, but that has been gone at least 15 years, along with the model shop that was on 5 too.

Now if only the footbridge could be extended to KFC <D

There is an old toilet block at the north end of 2 & 3. The drains collapsed which is why they were closed. It still happens with the current toilets on platform 2 from time to time.

I doubt very much any buffet or restaurant would be viable on the station anytime soon. The plans for the real ale bar went cold due to LM dragging their feet over the works needed. A shame as the 2 blokes then went and opened a micropub the other side of town which, putting it politely, is a right hole.

Yes remember that cafe/model shop. It was run by an ex Midland Red bus driver called Ashley. It sadly didnt go well and wasnt open long at all. By 2000 think it had closed. I wonder if recently the roof to platform 1 is fixed cause when it rains it leaks well over part of the platform. Platform 3 too but that may be fixed now.
