The shortest route is always a permitted route without recourse to the routeing guide maps. As is a route within 3 miles of the shortest route.

34.5 miles Nuneaton-Leamington-Stratford according to the timetable data. 46 miles via Birmingham.

You need to look at this the other way round: the routeing guide additionally allows travel via Birmingham. Not a requirement to travel this way.

Wilmslow to Stafford via Crewe didn’t use to be a mapped route, although I think it might be now, but it’s always been a valid route because it’s the shortest route.

Permitted routes are BI + BP which requires travel via Birmingham. https://vaildata.uk/routeing?orp=NUN&drp=G72&map=BP%2BBI

Surely travel via Coventry and Leamington Spa is a more obvious and shorter route which should also be permitted?
Fujitsu Journey Planner shows via Leamington Spa as being valid on a Nuneaton - Stratford-upon-Avon ticket.

It also flags up that there's no First Class accommodation when taking that route.
