Reading the London Reconnections blog today I discovered that the Nuneaton North Chord has been given the go-ahead by the Secretary of State for Transport.
Previously the local council had rejected planning permission and a public enquiry was held in March this year. The Dft have now approved the scheme and given Network Rail permission to apply for the Transport Works Order.

Once built, container trains would come from the Leicester direction, run through the station using platform 6, and then take the chord, which would leave the overhead line once it has crossed the WCML. A new embankment will then allow the chord to lose height and join the northbound WCML. This will avoid freight trains having to cross the WCML on the level. It will also allow container trains to be routed off the North London Line.
