Pondering the drags that used to regularly happen on the WCML and wondered more about their history.
There’s many discussions and pictures of the exotic traction they had in the 80s such as:

but wanted to know this:

When did they start? There’s pictures on Flickr in the late 70s when I guess they were taken notice of more as bashing took off. If they took place from the 60s onwards once electrification happened, were they just ignored as the engines used would have likely been common anyway?

The other point is, from an engineering/maintenance point of view: why did they stop? Was it a change of practices? Upgrades to OHLE ? (after WCRM perhaps- I wasn’t taking much notice of the railways around then.) I know BHM- EUS started to be sent via Stafford and the Trent Valley for a while instead, and the reluctance of VT to use their 57s/221s as time progressed.

The drags I had, latter half of the 1980s, were for diversions due to OHLE "refresh" work in west Widlands / Trent Valley; and also between Stockport and Stoke.
Invariably 47/4 or 47/8 at the head of the AC electric (north) or Mk3 DVT (south).

August 1988, 91006 was sat in Nuneaton, on a wheel skate; I don't know why the 91 was there. I took a couple of photos of the immaculate loco. :)

They go back to at least 1975.

Railway Observer June 1975 says, under Coventry:

Weekend diversions via Nuneaton continued during April, the electric locomotives being diesel hauled, usually by class 47s.

Diversions via Nuneaton around that time would have been for the construction of Birmingham International station.

They would have “stood out” less at that time as there was much more traction variety available on a day to day basis. Most of the spotlight would have been focussed on the WR and the demise of the hydraulics.
