Ricoh Arena
The project team met with David Gidney and Anthony Mundy from the Ricoh Arena
team to review the project and outline the options for station provision for the Arena and
surrounding area. There are a number of potential developments adjacent to the railway
that may influence traffic levels and station location.
• A proposal for a ‘third generation’ Snow Dome to be built on waste land to the
south of the railway opposite the Arena and adjacent to Arena Park.
• Arena Park is currently planning to build a retail extension to the existing retail
park
• An aspiration to build a hotel to towards to north side of car park ‘C’, adjacent to
the ProLogis branch line. Arena Coventry Ltd have an obligation to retain the
existing level of car park provision (2000 spaces); this might require construction
of a multi-storey car park if spaces are lost.
There was support for the concept of station provision at the site and particular interest
in the opportunity to develop a Park & Ride facility at the site; clearly this could have
significant revenue potential for the Ricoh Arena. The issue of crowd control at events
was debated, and the need for providing some kind of ‘filter’ or similar mechanism of
corralling large numbers of visitors waiting for public transport was seen as very
important.
