Rail travel never took off that much in the US, so the fact that a trip NY-LA is too long to really be viable means that they just don't bother.

Well, they obviously havn't played around with rail travel that much then! I know that back in the 80's, Amtrak were looking at the APT with a lot of interest...But when that project "failed" they forgot about running high-speed services. Nowadays they use the Acela (Basically a 373 with a heavier chassis and a pitiful top end of 130mph) but only on N.E. Corridor routes like Baltimore - Washington. :roll:

I bet that if we shipped the APT over to the US and had me drive it from New York to Los Angeles under my own rules (Where the journey would take no more than three hours! hock:), they'd forget about internal air travel in a heartbeat!

Anyhow: I might make this discussion the subject of a new topic in the International Rail forum.

The question is...Which way do we go from here?

And given that my ImageShack account is already a total mess with all the assorted gumph up on it, I'd rather not have to resize and upload stuff (Which can take some time) when a simple <IMG SRC=[Your URL] ALT=[Your description] WIDTH=90%> would do!
