Numbers on sleepers

I noticed this morning that on one of the lines in Prices St Gardens, one section now has big yellow plates with a number that have been fitted to the centre of many of the sleepers. The numbers seem to be consecutive and count down towards the Haymarket Tunnel. Some of them also have another yellow plate beside them with some writing on them just beside the number.

I'm wondering what they are for?

They sound like cant markers, the ones I see rise/fall in increments of 5 where the line cants (tilted for want of a better description) to one side.

Possibly these ones are rising in increments of 1 though.

But there are lots of signs of engineering works there at the moment - portable floods at the side, white spray paint appearing on cabling, and what appear to be brand new bright yellow spacer bars on the points near the mount tunnel.

Thinking about the latter I wonder if this all has something to do with findings relating to the recent derailment?

Cant markers are placed to the high side of the 4ft on the sleeper, at the top and bottom of the transition additional plates are now fitted detailing transition length and curve radius.

Some areas like to have chainage markers between the mileposts to make reporting and finding faults easier.

If there is S&C nearby then I would imagine they are sleeper numbers. Obviously when laying sleepers with cast fastening systems such as cast pandrol fastenings in concrete sleepers, it is necessery to number the sleepers throughout the S&C and leading up to the S&C.

It is not all sleepers. I had another look and the numbers are quire off centre, and the line is quite visibly canted even though it is on a straight section.
