NS started today with the first phase of a tender for new Sprinter trains, the request for information.
These Sprinters will be needed for an expected increase of passenger numbers in 2030, though current numbers are still at 80% of pre-COVID, and should enter service around 2027.
NS requested trains with fast acceleration and braking, suitable for 160 km/h being comfortable and accessible. Still under investigation is the option for dual use as both Sprinter and Intercity.
The first order would be for 8.000 till 18.000 seats, with options for follow-up orders including optional Belgium- and Germany-compatible trains.
