NS ordered 60 new double decker trains at the Spanish manufacturer CAF. Yesterday the contract was signed. The remarkable feature of these trains is that they consist of both single- and double deck coaches, offering more seats and an improved accessibility for passengers in wheelchairs due to level boarding.
The new trains will replace part of the current double decker fleet (the 51 DDZ trainsets) and the remainder will be an expansion of the current fleet. The order consists of 30 4-car and 30 6-car trains with in total 30.000 seats. The first new trains are expected to enter service in 2028.
