Hi folks,

I've planned a brief foray to the NRW region next week with the best option just being to purchase a Schönertag ticket for each day.

I note on the validity map the various spurs into the Netherlands (Heerlen, Venlo, Arnhem etc) which are undoubtedly valid.

However, the map provided on the DB website also shows Liege, Spa and Eupen. Is the ticket actually valid here or are these just there for illustrative purposes? The DB website essentially says to refer to the map, but the "Geltungsbereich" provided doesn't list Belgium.

As an aside- I know of the BR110 Ersatzzug running on the RB48 between Wuppertal and Bonn- are there any other particularly interesting haulage opportunities to look out for in the wider region?

Thanks in advance

You're right.
The map you need to use is the map linked under "where can I use my ticket?/Wo gilt das Ticket?" which distinguishes between the basic tarif area, the (dotted) lines where day tickets can be used, and the black lines that are just for reference.

If you're looking to explore the Aachen/Liege/Spa/Eupen Region, you could also consider buying a Euregio-ticket: https://www.belgiantrain.be/en/tickets-and-railcards/crossborder/euregio-ticket
€19 per person on weekdays, during weekends €19 for a maximum of 2 adults and 3 children. It's valid on most trains in the Netherlands/Belgium/Germany border region, as well as on all of the buses there.

Here is a validity map: https://avv.de/de/service/downloads?file=files/avv/files/tickets/flyer/euregioticket.pdf
For trains it's only valid on the blue-colored railway lines, for buses it's valid on all of the buses in the whole region.

Interesting stuff might be 145 088 on Abellio RE19 duties (with n-Wagen - the same stock used on the RB48 runs), working the following:
ABR 20049 Emmerich 06:51 - Düsseldorf Hbf 08:11
ABR 20044 Düsseldorf Hbf 16:12 - Emmerich 17:32
Both MFO.

If you check under https://infoportal.mobil.nrw/nrw-ta...geltungsbereich-von-pauschalpreistickets.html, you have a list of lines the SchönerTagNRW (and other fixed price tickets) are valid on outside NRW.

Those 3 here in NL and also Enschede, from Gronau, are the only ones on RAIL.
by german buses you can also reach Nijmegen, NIAG-58 from Kleve, Vaals from Aachen and Winterswijk on an expressbus from Münster.
note that currently the Belgian service from Aachen is due to constr. works limited to only Welkenraedt, where you change into the regular hourly IC to Ostend. And your NRW-ticket is not valid on either!
tip for cheap weekendtravel in VRR-area: ANY monthly T-2000 is valid on sat+sun plus any eve after 19.00 in whole VRR-area, incl,. the 2 raillinks into NL. The cheapest version for 1 zone is slightly under 60 eur, can be ordered and self-printed and start any day, thus can give you 5 full weekends (plus any holiday in between) for that money- not just for you, also for a friend to go together! VRR is a large part of but of course not the full NRW.

Many thanks for the gen on the 145 hauled Emmerich service- I'll try to fit that in.

It seems to be €15,60 for the extra foray to Spa (about 1hr 09 each way)- or €11ish at weekends as I'm under 26? It's my last bit of track that end of Belgium so I might decide to just tick it off while I'm that way.

Then again, the last time I went that way, there were different works which, helpfully, made the L train from Aachen arrive just after the IC had departed Welkenraedt! Thankfully I wasn't pushed for time and went down to Eupen and back to fill in the hour.

The VRR trick is one to note for the future- I'm around from 1000 Thursday to 1500 Saturday so not enough weekend time to warrant one of those (especially as
I'll probably be in all parts of the NRW region)

Having just about finished this trip (currently sat on the RB45 from Coesfeld to Essen) it's been a pretty successful one.

Managed to fit in the Ersatzzügen and ticked off a fair bit of track- gave Belgium a miss though.

But my god, reliability here is horrendous and communication even worse.

An example- I went for the RE17 this morning from Hagen to Warburg- screens showing it as Warburg, as was the train. Then we depart- "Welcome to the RegioExpress for Bestwig..."- the service was pined halfway without any sort of explanation! I ended up getting off at Schwerte and heading for Hamm etc. instead.

The RB45 I'm currently on is currently going nowhere for 25 minutes- and I've had to work out for myself why that is as the driver didn't bother telling us why.

I know its an exceptionally congested part of the network, but it certainly needs some help as the density of the railway and various urban networks is actually very impressive otherwise.
