NRM Mallard Simulator

Had a trip out to the NRM at York yesterday (11/12/2013), first time I've been in decades.

Went direct from Sheffield, investigated using my bus pass to get to Leeds or Doncaster, but for the small amount saved I took the least risky option and bought a Sheffield <> York off peak day return.

In the event there were disruptions to the service on the return leg and I had to change at Doncaster, so I could have saved a bit with my bus pass anyway.

Whilst at the NRM I tried the Mallard Simulator. Not the most excitement I've had for £4

I was expecting video shot from the cab and the simulator motion linked to that, but it was all CGI, the viewpoint being that of a bird flying alongside the train. There was a whiff of aniseed at the end when the aniseed bomb went off, I would have preferred sulphurous smoke and steam!

A video shot from the cab, you were really expecting that? Does such a video exist?

Judging by the average age of the punters using the simulator, much more movement or, for want of a better word, excitement could have caused health problems

I thought the simulator was harmless fun, the 8 year old we had with us loved it and has developed an interest in Mallard which has helped us decide a few Christmas presents

I wasn't thinking of a video of the actual run, they could have made a video from any of the A4s under steam.

As a 64 year-old I didn't feel a heart attack imminent, I don't suffer from any of the prohibited aliments and I'm not pregnant nor expecting to be in the near future at least. In retrospect I should have tried using my Railcard for a bit of discount, I'm a Yorkshireman too

It's great it got your kids interested. Whenever a train is depicted on kids TV it's nearly always a steam train although non of todays children under 40 would have seen a steam train in everyday use. We need the next generation to keep steam preservation alive.
