Am I right in thinking that a Greater Manchester Wayfarer and a Derbyshire Wayfarer are both 'zonal tickets' for the purposes of NRCoC 19(a) and that - subject to the relevant time restrictions - it is therefore permitted to use the fast trains between Stockport and Sheffield with these tickets?

Some people argue that they are, but I seriously doubt that you will have a trouble-free journey.

The conditions of carriage definition:

(w) “Zonal Tickets” are those tickets which permit travel only within a defined area.

So how would you go about justifying that?

So can you form a view as to whether travel 'only within a defined area' includes travel 'in the designated areas'?

It looks fine to me; unlike West Yorkshire and GM, there is a distinct overlap - e.g., the train passes through Chinley which is clearly valid on both tickets.
