NR advertising for operatives in Worcester. Any operatives out there that could shed some light on the role, shift pattern and salary please? Thinking of going for it but I'd like to hear from a few that do the job first. Thanks.
Which department? I've had a look at the vacancy list, but it's not clear.
Shift patterns vary between depots, S&T maintenance and faulting often being 24/7
Salary depends on which former pre-renationalisation maintenance company terms and conditions are at that location.
As for role, if it's an S&T Operative, you'll be training on signalling equipment, probably working in teams with higher graded Technicians and Team Leaders and assisting with the faulting and maintenance of it. It can be very varied, working on Victorian through to solid state equipment. You will be a bit of a gofer though, until you get more experience.
For the Track, (or Permanent Way as it's better known), or Electrification & Plant (E&P) I can't profess to know a lot about how they train their staff.
There is a story of a harmonisation of staff conditions, obviously with the company choosing a far less generous package for new staff, but that's not happening. Yet.

Sorry, yes, I've copied the wrong link when I was trying to fathom out which department it would likely be. Sadly, it doesn't say.
It all comes down to you really.
Track can be a lot of lifting and shifting, while having a qualification in a technical subject is not as advantageous as having one for joining the S&T would be, if you're looking to proceed through the grades.
Maybe contact HR and see what department it's in, and take it from there.
HR can be quite slow at responding, so a phone call may be better than an email to apply before the closing date.

Hi everyone. On the subject of the role 'OPERATIVE'... I've seen various Operative roles advertised and the job description is the same for all of them whether they're 'Signalling maintenance', 'track', 'off track' etc. I can work out the difference between all of those but if a role is advertised as just 'OPERATIVE', does this mean you will be a kind of jack of all trades doing all of the above jobs? Thanks in advance.
Yeah they are usually generic mate. They usually put in the title what the job is actually for. E.g “operative(signalling maintenance) would be s&t maintenanceHi everyone.
