NR Operative (works delivery signalling)

hi,

Apologies if this has been asked before but having trawled this site and other internet options I’m struggling to find much information about the above mentioned position and the adverts on the NR website seems to have a generic description that covers all Operative jobs but this clearly can’t be the case.

If anybody would be prepared to provide some insight on the working life of a works delivery signalling Operative for NR I would be most grateful.

Signalling operative is working with signals and telecoms There are three grades on track to my knowledge this being Operative,Technician and Team Leader.With you being a Operetive you not expected to gain same qualifications as the other two but obviously the pay reflects on your responsibilities but main thing is getting foot in the door.It will pay you to know about voltage systems etc and relays etc

I can only speak for signals maintenance but what is said above is about right, the positions are operative, technician, and team leader in that order. You'll get the basic courses to allow you to complete your job, maybe not straight away but you should be taught things by your other team members to keep you going. Having basic electrical knowledge can help but remember that railway drawings are different from standard convention.

Works delivery involves upgrade work to the infrastructure so you may be installing new signal heads, new point machines, location case upgrades, running in new cables, or possibly even minor works in the lead up to a major project.

Do nr offer internal training to allow operatives to become technicians?

Yes you get offered training for your job the railway works on a system if your not proven competent you not allowed to do.
As for other training you get for your role and if you decide to apply for Technician role you be trained on extra competencies and so on.The railways a good industry to be in just can play bit of havoc with social life but as they say take good with the bad your find your have more good than bad
