NR/IATA Codes

Hi all,

As everyone should know, all NR stations have a TLC that is unique to them. This set of codes extends even beyond NR to, for example, Belfast Central (BFC). However, all notable airports - even some with no passenger service - have a similar TLC. For the most part, there is no common ground between them at all; to give a few examples:

Southend = SEN; NR code is for Shenstone
Birmingham = BHX; NR code is not used
Carlisle = CAX; NR code is not used
Aberdeen = ABZ; NR code is not used
Shoreham = ESH; NR code is for Esher
Cardiff = CWL; NR code is for Colwall
Lerwick = LWK; NR code is not used

All of the above have no relation with each other at all. As matches go, the closest is Shoreham, but Esher is 50 miles away!

Then there are three odd ones I know of:

Luton = LTN; NR code is for Luton AP
Newquay = NQY; NR code is for Newquay
Manchester = MAN; NR code is for Piccadilly

Luton I assume was deliberate; Newquay not so (neither is very busy to be fair). But the last one worries me.

Are there any other examples of the local airport sharing its code with a nearby station? Although unlikely, does this ever cause confusion (away from this forum obviously! )

Newcastle airport has the IATA code NCL and Newcastle Central has the same code.

Valley (VAL) doesn't match with Anglesey Airport (VLY). Curiously, RAF Valley (which predates the commercial airport) has the IATA code HLY for Holyhead!

Manchester may match Picadilly, but that of course means that it doesn't match Manchester Airport railway station (MIA).

Of course, none match their ICAO code, which is four letters and starts "EG" for all UK airports.

Inverness, Exeter (St Thomas), Oxford, Cambridge. Although you'd struggle to get a scheduled flight out of the latter

Other oddities are Southampton Central (SOU), and Glasgow 'all stations' (GLA)

Why? Plans apparently exist for turboprop flights to Amsterdam, and the RAF can just about get an empty Tristar in...and then out again:roll:

Why cambridge airport though, the most they could ever hope for was FlyBE, Air France Reigonal and KLM City Hopper flights...

And the small UK Carriers, like Eastern Airways

An RAF Tristar isn't a scheduled flight for public use! I doubt Cambridge will get a scheduled service easily with the countries 3rd busiest airport, Stansted barely 30 miles away.

A few others I've found that don't match:

NR: Teeside Airport (TEA) - IATA code for Durham Tees Valley Airport is DTV. Not that the station is of much use, it's served by 4 trains a week!

NR: Liverpool South Parkway (LSY) - IATA code for Liverpool Airport is LPL. Although, that's not strictly an airport station!

NR: Prestwick Airport (PRA) - IATA code for 'Glasgow' Prestwick is PIK.

Luton I assume was deliberate; Newquay not so (neither is very busy to be fair).

Luton is considerably busier than Newquay - in fact Luton in 2010 was the fifth busiest airport in the UK (in terms of passenger numbers) after Manchester and is a base for easyJet, Monarch Airlines, Thomson Airways and Ryanair! Plus, it's extensively used for private jets with "clients" going to London.

Unless things have changed, the last time this was mooted as a "fishing trip" by Marshalls in the local paper last year, which was a front page story where they admitted buried inside the article that they hadn't actually spoken to any airlines about it.

There's actually a few scheduled services use Cambridge, but none of them are open to the public. BAe for example have a service (think it uses Gulfstreams or similar) to the north west as I understand it.

MIA is both Manchester Airport and Miami, SIN is both Singer and Singapore.

There are loads more like this.

I had meant NQY/NQY Neither Newquay station nor airport is exactly bursting at the seams. I do know that Luton is the fifth busiest (although fourth of London's six).
