With the rumour in the press that the proposed Electrification Scheme from Liverpool to Manchester via Earlestown possibly shelved, are the other schemes now under threat?

Also, in the future, does NR intend or does anybody agree with me that the following lines should be electrified:-

Acton Main Line-Acton Wells Jn
Acton Wells Jn-Dudding Hill Jn/Cricklewood
Junction Rd Jn-Carlton Road Jn
Gospel Oak-Barking (including remodelling Gospel Oak Station to include 2 through platforms on the Barking line?)
Harringay Curve

As always, look forward to your responses.

Gospel Oak - Barking is an important infill that will not only help passenger trains but provide additional freight route that will use electric rather than diesel.

TfL have been pushing to get the money but seems they haven't had any luck recently.

two things:

1. DBs debts are not included in German Public debt because it can be exempted under EU rules, why should NR be different?
2. Is there any potential to replace the diesel engines on an HST with electric motors?

It's been a year since the GW electrification project was announced. Exactly what works has been done on this project during this time ?

Drawing office work and site surveys. These could easily take a couple of years before you'd see a spade in the ground anyway...

If you did that you'd have electric motors driving an alternator driving electric motors. :-? An HST already has electric motors.

If you wanted to just run under wires you'd need to replace the diesel engine and alternator with a transformer and control system. If you wanted bi-mode, you'd need space to add a transformer and control system, and keep the existing engine/alternator.

They appear to be looking into midland now, more compact shorter and 222's can be very easily converted. Much cheaper for government and allows them to be seen as green. interesting idea.
government aren't keen on GW electrification so i doubt it will go ahead now. Shame.

If the decision is taken to electrify the MML instead of GWML, how do the costs stack up, which option would make more sense?

Cascade all the 222s and HSTs from EMT to FGW and procure new electric stock for EMT, giving FGW some new stock, and more HSTs to choose from, allowing the worst examples to be retired.

Or

Pay for conversion of the 222s to electric operation, and life extension for all the current FGW HST sets - given that some must be in a worse state than others?

Thats the point I was making in the other thread, the GWML wiring was mainly tied to stock replacement (HSTs approaching end of life, new stock needed, might as well electrify it) - the MML already has a mostly Modern fleet of Meridians.

The Rub with the GWML wiring was that it was dependant on a cascade of 319s for local serivices, as the 319s are now staying put it means either continue to use Turbos under wires or new units. This would have also released Turbos to work FGW locals in the Westcountry cascading Sprinters to erode Pacer numbers in the north.

If anything, I hope if they do electrified Bristol Temple Meads that they do it as they have done so at York and Paddington where the OHLE is hardly noticeable.

Which brings me to my next GWML related query, Why isn't Platforms 1 and 2 electrified at Paddington up to Subway Tunnel (LUL) via Royal Oak Sidings and the Link line?

Just to me that if they were done okay only the Heathrow Expresses could use them but if a platform had to be closed for whatever reason, then it still leaves a platform in which to use electric stock.

There has been suggestion of a new Mk3 build and electric Traxx loco's with DVT's. These could in due course easily replace cl43 power cars as well. Surprisingly this is cheaper, and less technically demanding that the DfT specified Hitachi which appears to be able to produce miracle power (See RAIL and Modern railways technical analysis passim)

Platforms 3 to 12 have wires above them. Plenty of choice if a platform does need to close.
