Nr 150

At 13:50 today, a Network Rail yellow 150 passed through Bath heading east. Having never seen an NR 150 before, this surprised me somewhat. Does anyone have any information about it, and where it was going/from?

It's a track assessment unit, although because it's departmental it's designated a class 950: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_950

Apparently it's 3rd rail as well...

I have to say, it's rather diesely for a 3rd rail unit, and has a remarkable capability for running over lines that aren't electrified.

Funny you say that; I could have sworn that I saw it in Bath earlier

At about 15:00 and 19:40 this evening I saw the same unit stabled in Westbury yard.

in the writing it says its a dmu, in the stats on the right of the page says it runs 3rd rail! even wikipedia cant make its mind up

Perhaps it's similar to the HST version which has a pantograph to check the OHLE but can't actually draw power. Only this has 3rd rail shoes to check 3rd rail rather than a pantograph.

Then again Wiki could be suffering from multiple personality!
