Tchaikovsky Symphony no2 "The Little Russian" played by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Igor Markevitch. During Tchaikovsky's time Little Russia was the name given to the Ukraine and this symphony contains some Ukrainian folk songs.

Mieczyslav Weinberg, symphony no18 "War-there is no word more cruel',played by the St Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Lande.
Weinberg sought sanctuary in the Soviet Union after most of his family were murdered by the Nazis (he was Jewish). His music was promoted by Shostakovich although he was persecuted and eventually imprisoned under Stalin but released when Stalin died and continued to live there until 1996 when he died. This symphony says it all really.
