Nottingham tram route going the "wrong direction"

I couldn't find any information on this, however why does the Nottingham tram lines go the "wrong way" relative to each other between the forest and Wilkinson street tram stops?

Was there no alternative route to stop crossing over each running line?
Or was it so that it could serve either side of the Asda?

Initially the plan was for them to go the “right way” with trams out of the city going via radford road and ones to the city going via Noel street. Businesses on Radford Road campaigned that they’d lose out on business from passing passengers on the tram who might see a shop they like and stop off on the way into the city. So that’s why it’s the way it is. Whilst the two flat crossings might not be ideal, it all works surprisingly well.

One advantage of having it the way it is the bit just before Shipstone Street where trams navigate a tight twisty curve that is also at quite a gradient. Trams going up this bit may struggle to get going again if they had to stop if say someone walked out in front. Visibility is quite poor due to the twisty nature. It’s not unknown for trams to get stuck on the hill up to the High School due to poor adhesion.

What is the remedy if one gets stuck on the hill?

What is the remedy if one gets stuck on the hill?

An NET branded van arriving with big bags of salt/grit and pouring them onto the track around the affected tram as it tries to inch it’s way up to the High School stop. They do have sanders onboard but I guess there’s times when more is just needed

Sanders are only useful for braking, they drop sand when there is wheelslip, if the tram is unable to move there is no way the tram can lay sand under the wheels.
