Nottingham to Rochdale

National Rail Website is suggesting an Off Peak Return at £23.70 is valid Via Leeds? Is it?

It would be ideal if it was as I could visit Manchester and Leeds in the same day with 1 ticket.

The only reason I ask this is because...

1) A Nottingham to Leeds OPR is £24.40
2) When I try NRW Nottingham to (nearby) Littleborough it suggests some journeys are valid via Leeds and some aren't!

Yes (Traceable on maps SY+WY)
1) there isn't an OPR (Super Off Peak Return) for that flow; the SVR (Off Peak Return),which is the regulated fare, is £39 to Leeds which is cheaper than the SVR to Rochdale and demonstrates that via Leeds is a long-standing permitted route under BR days and entirely reasonable. The price you quote is a CDR (Off Peak Day Return) fare and as the price of these is highly variable it shouldn't be used as a comparison of reasonableness or historic validity.
2) (not sure why NRW is here? That's Norwich!) If you compare like for like itineraries you will get identical results. Without specifying via points you will not get any issues with Nottingham to Rochdale because the fastest itineraries are via Bradford. However once you specify Littleborough you will instead be given some itineraries via Dewsbury. The problem is that this route is not mapped. This is clearly an error in the Routeing Guide.

(Sorry to moan but regarding ticket codes eg OPR/CDR and station codes eg NRW/NOT, these can be used providing they are defined at first use, but are best avoided unless you are certain they are correct; those of us who work with fares data are familiar with many codes and get used to them but I know not everyone is, and a wrong code can cause those of us who do know our codes to get confused)
