Hello,

There were some 25p special offer rooms for Travel Lodge advertised over the weekend, I managed to grab 2 in Edinburgh.

Any idea what the cheapest way to get to Edinburgh arriving anytime between 2pm and 4pm on 6/10/10 and departing the same time on the 8/10/10.

We dont hold any railcards.

Cheers.

Coming back seems to be the tricky part. On the East Coast website you can get Advance singles £22 each for the trip up, if you search via Newark.

The best I can find for the way back is splitting Advances at Manchester for the 16:11 from Edinburgh and 19:43 from Man Picc, £30 each.

The Nottingham - Edinburgh Off-Peak Return route Any Permitted is £102.40 each, valid outward and return M-F by any train except those scheduled to depart before 0500, so that's the fare we have to beat.

Unfortunately, the cheapest fares are seldom available for Friday afternoon inter-city travel. The best I can see by fast trains is:

Wed 6 Oct 2010
Advance Single Nottingham - Edinburgh £22.70 each for:
13:34 Nottingham - Grantham 14:05
14:17 Grantham - Doncaster 14:53
15:03 Doncaster - Edinburgh 18:03
Available only at eastcoast.co.uk
As CompactDstrxion says, fares are also available at this price via Newark, but this involves a walk between Newark Castle and Newark Northgate (1 mile).

Fri 8 Oct 2010
Advance Single 1307 Edinburgh - Chesterfield 1705 £32 each.
Anytime Day Single 1722 Chesterfield - Nottingham 1800 £10 each.

Total £64.70 each.

Going via Newark lets you arrive within your 2-4 window which is not possible via Grantham at this price.

09:21 Nottingham - Newark Castle arr 09:50
Walk to Newark North Gate
10:48 Newark North Gate - York arr 11:37
11:55 York - Edinburgh arr 14:25

Advance £22.70 each

For the journey back:

16:11 Edinburgh - Manchester Piccadilly arr 19:27 (£22.50 advance single)
19:43 Manchester Piccadilly - Nottingham arr 21:38 (£8 advance single)

Total £53.20 each

Wish I had known about this offer, excellent value. You can't even get a cup of tea for 25p these days!
