Tram super structure gets a ‘big lift’ over the A52

A striking new tram bridge will be driven from the Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) campus and into position over the A52 this weekend (28 – 29 September) using state-of-the-art transporters, as part of the expansion of Nottingham’s tram network.

Measuring 62 metres long and weighing more than 1,000 tonnes, the new steel bowstring arch bridge will be jacked six metres up to its installation height later this week. It will then make its journey into position on top of four 40-wheel self-propelled modular transporters on Saturday evening.

The A52 tram bridge is one of a series of structures that will eventually form a 300 metre long elevated tram route through the QMC, over the A52 and down into The University of Nottingham’s campus.

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust Chief Executive, Dr Peter Homa, said: “This is a significant milestone and the reality of being the only hospital in the country to link to a tram network is one step closer. The benefits for patients, visitors and staff are going to be significant in terms of ease of access to the hospital when the extended tram network is operational.”

Michael Anderson, Project Director for the NET Phase Two construction contractor, Taylor Woodrow Alstom, said: “Following the success of the bridge slide over Nottingham Railway Station, this is another key element of the construction project. It is a major feat of engineering and the talents of a large team of people will be involved in moving what is a spectacular structure into place – a further demonstration that the NET Phase Two project is really starting to take shape.”

Just hope it doesn't overrun! With the marathon closing several roads in the area the following morning, if the Ring Road is shut too then you might as well forget getting anywhere in the western half of Nottingham.
