Nottingham - Grantham - Kings Cross is almost always cheaper (£4-£5 cheaper) than Nottingham - St Pancras direct. (NRE results)

2 questions

1) Can you reserve Nottingham-Grantham in August. I know you normally cant but this being Skegness on a summer Saturday, wondered if you could then.

2) Will I get refunded if I loose my connection at Grantham if the train runs late as I am travelling with 2 older people who wont be able to run.

I'm assuming you mean "miss" where you say "loose"?

Eastcoast offers me the option to reserve a seat when I book - do they give you counted place reservations?

You can probably solve both problems by (in most hours) catching the 15 minutes earlier service towards Norwich. If you use the text version of the eastcoast system you should be able to extend the conection time at Grantham.

Are you booking this as a through journey or a by splitting tickets somehow?

I agree with Deerfold - searching on East Coast for Advance fares allows through tickets from Nottingham to King's Cross to be booked on most services (although not those that continue from Nottingham to Skegness). You can also chose your seats, selecting a table for example. And you get an extra 10% off Advance fares if you book via East Coast's website.

If you book through tickets then your connection is guaranteed ie you can get the next train if you are delayed.

A connection isn't guaranteed but your entitlement to complete your journey on later trains equally applies irrespective of whether you have one ticket, or two or more tickets for your journey.

If it's a valid connection, you're covered.

A few people used to argue that there was a risk. However that was debunked years ago. There's a PDF copy of the Fares FAQ from The Manual available as an attachment in our Fares Guide (1.1.3 Advance Tickets) with all this documented.
