I think what I plan on doing is right, just want to make sure I'm allowed!

Travelling Nottingham - Castleford on sunday! Return is 28.

Nottingham- Leeds is 23 pounds

Can i buy the Leeds ticket and stop short at castleford? I think I'm allowed too!

The Leeds fare is a day return. The Castleford fare is a period return.

What you are proposing doing is fine.

And in fact, if you buy the Leeds ticket then you could, if the times suit better, go via Leeds in one direction (but not both).

I'm going to be pedantic here and point out that although there is nothing wrong in theory with "stopping short" at Castleford on a Nottingham to Leeds ticket, Nottingham to Leeds is not in fact permitted via Castleford according to the Routeing Guide (nor, for that matter, is Sheffield to Leeds, unless travelling on a through train). Map SY appears to be missing a link between Pontefract Group (which Castleford is a member of) and Leeds Group.

In saying that of course it's a very reasonable route and nobody is likely to pull you up on it, and if you did I'm sure you'd have no problem invoking the "disputed route procedure".

If you get trains that stop at Meadowhall both ways you can save a further 50p over the Nottingham to Leeds Off-Peak Day Return (CDR) fare (£23.90), and be unequivocally valid, as follows:
Nottingham to Meadowhall CDR £13.60
Meadowhall to Castleford CDR £9.80
Total £23.40

Be aware also that there's engineering work on Sundays between Nottingham and Chesterfield and the train will be replaced by a bus.

You may be able to avoid it by travelling on the Nottingham to Sheffield leg via Derby, but I'm not sure if that would be a valid route for a Nottingham-Leeds ticket.

The ticket will be accepted via Derby, or on direct EMT services between Nottingham and Chesterfield / Sheffield.
