It's not that short a distance - it's 3.2mi from The Traveller's Rest to Long Eaton Green. And it's only £2.03 with a MANGO.

As others have noted, high single fares isn't unique to TB.

Where I'm living at the moment (Swansea), First Cymru charge £2.50 single to go from Swansea University to the Quadrant bus station - a journey of 1.9mi. As First have pretty much got a monopoly on travel in the area and there's no PTE here, I don't hold hope of ever getting a smartcard for cheaper travel, or live bus times for that matter.

From where I'm sitting, TB seems much better value for money.

Just thinking about comparable length journeys in Swansea.

It's 3.2mi from Olchfa School / Hendrefoelan Student Village (front) to the city centre, plotted using the 20/21A route. A single is £3.00.

We are pretty fortunate to have TB around here, I think people forget that sometimes. The bus service in Swansea is (or was when I was there) shockingly poor! Dirty clapped out old buses trundling along at slow speeds running at low frequencies with no late / night services and limited Sunday services.

Without wanting to derail the thread too much... First have started to invest in a lot of new stock in Swansea - all the old Marshall bodied Darts are now all but gone (though I think they're still the mainstay in Port Talbot). There's still nothing but a skeleton service after 6:30pm though. And the frequencies are still way down on most routes compared with when I first lived in Swansea in 2006-9.

I grew up in and around Nottingham, always in TB served areas. To me, most other cities feel like a step backwards.

TB are pretty good at most things and their drivers are their best asset. Unfortunately, the company as a whole suffers badly from so much marketing and hype that it becomes rather easy to knock them off their self-imposed pedestal when things go wrong (rather often).

Citylink Nottingham - Bramcote - Derby: Daily (yourbus) Revised timetable with effect from 20 April 2014. Additional stopping point at Lenton, Savoy Cinema.

What do you lot think then? Yet another stop? A good one?

I'd like to see it stop in the Pride Park area, I can't help but feel there's a market for one given the large amount of people who work in the area during the week and of course there is the iPro Stadium on Saturdays.

Probably a bit too innovative though as it would involve a change in the route.

News on the Derby side is the Ilkeston Flyer to be reduced in frequency (presumably to every 20 minutes) and extended to Cotmanhay, make of that as you will

Surprised to see from the same source that the night pronto buses will be withdrawn between Chesterfield and Mansfield.

(It's also on the trentbarton site but I'd missed it).

It's been a while since I've seen tb's night network contract.

Anyone know if it's a lack of demand or too much trouble from revellers?

Don't know.

I saw the changes were registered a couple of months ago, and I'm disappointed that this is all it is. I was hoping they would add a few minutes recovery time to help punctuality, but no...

They are extending the night threes to Kirkby & Sutton presumably using the drivers that used to drive the night Pronto.

So we now have Trent Barton copying Yourbus routes. Who said competition wasn't innovative!

Well I never TB copying YourBus!

TB need to start innovating ASAP anyway as the tram is about to clean out a big chunk of their network.

Indigo will be hit the most, they'll probably be withdrawn eventually...leaving their other buses to pick up Long Eaton and Derby customers.

A handful of routes massively affected? Quite possibly. A big chunk of their network? No.

Given the Beeston corridor already has Yourbus, NCT and tb running high frequency services, I can't see them all disappearing (and isn't this going to affect the Y36 just as much?)

Considering TB have a stake in the tram I don't think that's an issue.

Why don't you actually do some research?

Possibly because he is totally blinkered to any facts that he doesn't like ?

Or that he's employed by a Wellglade competitor ?

Or, perhaps it's just the simple fact that he's a ......... [fill in your personal word or description]

Trent Barton probably aren't that interested in Nottingham-Beeston journeys, since their routes are longer distances so a Beeston passenger fills a seat that could have earned a higher fare for a journey such as Nottingham to Long Eaton. There will be some passengers between Beeston and Long Eaton but fewer than between Beeston and the main centre at Nottingham. This is likely to be the reason for TB's longstanding policy on most of their Nottingham routes of not going out of their way to attract shorter-distance passengers from NCT.

Hence the tram is likely to hit TB relatively less than other operators on the Beeston corridor. However both NCT and Yourbus serve the uphill part of the University campus and the student area between the Savoy and Canning Circus, so unsurprisingly they are both going for the student market to make up some of the short fall.

Only problem with that statement Edwin is that they run Indigo shorts Nottingham-Beeston every 10minutes as well as the Long Eatons. I can seriously see the Beeston shorts going when the tram arrives - and I do wonder if the NCT 36B Beeston shorts might also suffer, though with them using Derby Rd instead of University Boulevard (where NCT have already withdrawn from) it should have less effect.

I'd have to agree with Mitch that Beeston - Nottingham is relatively important. As Mitch says, there are the Beeston "short" workings and on the longer runs there is a lot of passenger exchange at Beeston bus station, so in fact a fair bit of the capacity on a particular bus is paid for by both (say) a Long Eaton - Beeston and Beeston - Nottm ticket. There is one bad problem with the tension between short and long distance journeys and that's late at night when the university is up. Large numbers of students get on in the City centre only to go as far as the Savoy cinema area - very tempting with the TB flat fare of £1 with NUS card - even though it's not far to walk. The problem is for the poor old soul from Draycott who is standing by the Cathedral after a nice evening at the theatre: the bus sails past packed to the rafters, leaving him behind, only for that (Derby-bound) bus to be half empty by the time it leaves the QMC.

Thats always been the case since deregulation when country services stopped being restricted. It is also a problem on high frequency routes which become hourly at the end of routes (eg rainbow1) and passengers have full buses passing them and end up waiting an hour for the next one. Current system doesn`t work.

Thanks to both for pointing these out - didn't know these had appeared (are they recent?) and for the reasons I posted previously I'm really not sure why TB is going after Nottingham-Beeston and student traffic. It doesn't seem to be a sustainable long term strategy so I think they are probably trying to knock Yourbus out of the market before both they and NCT reduce service in the face of tram competition. TB would then concentrate on the long-distance passengers and NCT on the student and other catchment along Derby Road that is not close to tram stops.

Trent buying out yourbus...a possibility?

Unlikely, but it must be annoying for Trent to realise (a bit late in the day) that it was their own shortcomings that allowed YB to enter the market in significant numbers.

If Trent had paid more attention to the basics, rather than which pretty colour to repaint buses in that month, they might not now have a significant amount of competition on their, otherwise nicely profitable, routes.

I don't think it's quite as simple as that. There's a big question mark about the extent of the competition, how successful it is and, most importantly, how it is being funded.

LOL Trent buy out YourBus? I think some people have their fanboy/wishful thinking blinkers on.

Flip that scenario on it's head and you'd be closer to the mark ;) Those Mercedes buses aren't cheap you know, like Trent's fleet. The people behind YB are real money men, they aren't some family run old mans establishment like TB.

Loadings seem to be increasing well for the YB routes too, especially Y5. The plan is going well for them.

Don't be a sucker ! :)
