Nottingham 'Bus War'

They drop buses totally from the timetable if running close to one of the other buses and send the empty bus via a quicker route back to the other terminus in order to get back on time. How can anyone disagree this is unethical?

I've been on plenty of NCT buses where the football traffic has bunched them up and, after the driver has checked with the passengers, one of the buses has continued through the estate and the one I'm on has carried on down the main road - those passengers waiting for the first would have been delayed anyway, and those waiting for the second get on the first at the same time the second would have arrived; but more importantly passengers on later services get one which is operating much nearer the schedule that otherwise.

Never understood how these 'bus wars' benefit passengers. I live in London where there's no bus wars and no competition. Just a unified bus service with a unified price structure (£1.20 with your Oyster card). Plus an easy to use web site.

Seems to work fine.

To be fair London buses are heavily taxpayer subsidised!

I lived in Edinburgh for a few years and it was horrific. So many faults to be found with the main bus company which completely lacked any form of creative innovation, or even a willingness to be 'above average'. PR got better in the last few years but there was times where I'd actually prefer First over this company.

I missed the value of public transport in Notts very much.

So what is the devolved Scottish Parliament or local MPs doing about the state of the Scotland capital's bus network!

£2 bus single is no big deal, tram has been £2 for a while.

I'd also just like to confirm at this juncture that the forum's 'ignore list' feature works brilliantly.

To be fair TfL only charges £1.45 for a single in expensive London!

IMO, anyone who slags off TB & NCT hasn't used buses elsewhere in the country (or has another agenda). There is a reason why both keep winning awards

It's a shame that the maroon bus line will be completely withdrawn on the 30th when the 14 is discontinued.

Even more irritating when you consider that NCT passes won't be valid on the tram!

Always thought "Maroon line" was a pretty poor name for a bus.

However with the tram providing a much faster journey to most of the outer reaches of the 14 route from later this year, and both Skylink and Y5 serving the inner end, it's not too surprising that this one hasn't survived. NCT have offered to upgrade the Easyrider passes of affected users to Kangaroo for the remainder of their validity at no extra cost.

First are very variable.

They've improved quite a bit in Leeds in recent years - and didn't get half as bad there as in some areas.

They're starting to improve in some other areas - however when I get their one remaining route in the village I grew up (they used to operate 3 commercial routes and 3 tendered) I'm usually reminded why people don't like them. The conditions of the buses are dreadful.

are Kangaroo tickets valid on TB night buses? IIRC I got turned away from a TB Midnight departure with a Kangaroo but was able to use it on an NCT Midnight bus

I don't think TB number any routes 'N' any more, though I remember they did at one time.

I think it's a bit of a grey area on Indigo when the premium services do start, but on all other routes the runs marked "FS Only" are clearly the premium ones. Bar Skylink and Indigo, I don't think any other routes have post-midnight departures in the week anyway.

Kangaroo and ZigZag aren't ordinarily accepted on TB night runs, but they are currently running a promotion where ZigZag is accepted on night buses. I don't think it's a long-term offer though.

MANGO touches on night buses are charged at the night rate minus the usual 25%, but the daily cap is ignored if you've reached that.

I think that's arguing semantics. As above, bar Skylink and Indigo, TB don't do weekday departures after midnight, so those that operate on Fri/Sat nights are clearly specials.

There's a departure at exactly midnight daily on the 3B. How would that be counted?

If that's fine, why is midnight ok on one service but not another?

If I remember right there's a 0005 departure on the Ruddington Connection that is also standard fares. Whereas the midnight departure on the rainbow1 is premium rated - but the Threes midnight departure isn't!
Definitely a grey area.

As I was entering Derby yesterday before 1330hrs I saw G & J Holmes 212 leaving with a fairly full load. Something seemed odd and when I got home checked the timetable - It leaves at 1345! Is running 20 minutes early on a registered service legal?

Considering that's the only time it runs with a 2 week wait for the next bus, then yep it should be reported to the TC. I'd be fuming if i wanted to catch that route, turned up to the stop 5-10 minutes before the departure only to find it left 20 minutes early.
