Nottingham City confirms £1.7m order for eight Optare Solo EVs

Nottingham City Council has placed an order with Optare for eight of its Solo EV battery-powered buses as part of a £1.7 million project that includes a £760,000 contribution from the Government’s Green Bus Fund.
Delivery of the 32-seater, 9.5 metre buses will start in the Autumn with four of the buses entering service on the Centrelink service. This is a free service introduced last year and which connects key shopping areas of the city including the Victoria and Broadmarsh Centres and the Old Market Square. The Solo EVs will be operated by trentbarton and will replace existing diesel-engined buses on the service.
The other four EVs will be delivered towards the end of the year for use on the City Council’s Link Bus network, which includes the Worklink, Shoplink, Unilink and MediLink services.
In introducing the Solo EV Nottingham becomes one of only three UK cities to pioneer this new clean technology (see editors’ note). The Solo EV emits zero emissions from its main propulsion system and its low noise level also brings environmental benefits.
