Above the fold-down baby changing shelf is a notice saying "Maximum weight 20kg. This table (shelf?) is to be used for baby changing only".

What could they possibly be implying? A spate of extremely large babies?

Most fold down baby changing tables (in shops and restaurants etc.) state a maximum weight between 20 and 30 kgs.

A lot of children still wear nappies at 3 years of age and can be hitting 30 kgs at that age.

It's just a legal cover your arse note. If it's not there then some full grown adult will sit on the table, get injured when it inevitably collapses and sue the company responsible for the upkeep of the table. It's not unique to the railway, you see them on baby changing tables in shopping centres, leisure centres and the like too.

I think you're getting your units mixed up. An average 3 year old is 30 lbs or 14 kilos. They won't reach 30 kilos (66 lbs / 4.5 stones) until they are 9 or 10.

Some adults with continence problems need changing benches as well. (A baby-sized one wouldn't hold their weight though!)

That was what I was getting at in my original post  but it seems most users of this forum have purer minds than me! .

Now call me a prude if you like. But I can't think of anything worse than indulging in said act somewhere where a nappy change might have just taken place!!!
