I've used Trainsplit to get £45-£48 without getting into Crewe after midnight!

Can any of the experts get it below £40?

For the outward journey, the chespest option I can find would be to travel via London to Crewe - £6.60 Advance to Liverpool Street, then £11.90 from Zone U1 to Crewe. That would be on the 18:00 from Norwich to Liverpool Street and then the 20:46, getting into Crewe just after 11pm.

On the way back it's more complicated - because there is engineering work on both routes to and from London (no trains along the Trent Valley or between Ipswich and Norwich).

This means you have 2 extra changes if you go via London, unless you use Avanti (whose correct timetable is not uploaded yet for that date) which would likely be more expensive anyway. So your nephew may prefer to go via Peterborough. Pricewise it's much the same either way; I can't see anything for less than £22.

So it should be possible to make the entire journey for a smidgeon under £40.
