The protection of the Great Crested Newt IIRC comes from European legislation. The species is very rare in Europe as a whole, but is commonly found in the UK.

As an example of how common they can be, I was involved with a project where the standard ecology license is for dealing with 100 Great Crested Newts and an application had to be made to exceed it.

The project in question wasn't all that big (only really dealing with a single large farmers field).

I don't think that has ever been discussed. The plan is to run to and from Newcastle platform 1
I think an early suggestion by locals was that it should be a Metro extension, but as I think was mentioned earlier in this thread that was ruled out early on as too expensive in terms of electrification, and would apparently have negated any time savings compared to buses if running via Gosforth and Jesmond.

Then more recently I think objectors near to Northumberland Park had proposed that in order to remove the work near their existing houses and gardens the line could be combined with the metro through the station area. That might have appeared to some people as a reduction in length of the project.

I'm sure I recall reading a local newspaper story at some point or another which suggested that the service may have to operate just Northumberland Park to Ashington, but I can't find it now. Either way, from memoru it was just local news speculation.

Terminating at Northumberland Park & continuing by T & W Metro instead, would mean a significant extra journey time to the main destination of Newcastle City Centre. There are 10 other Metro stations to get to Central.

I think it will work the other way round, some metro passengers may change to Northern at Northumberland Park from the coast to run express and avoid Longbenton/Jesmond stations.

A daft idea as the line clearly continues all the way to the ECML junction with a grade separation to cross the metro alignment. Whether the new service terminated at or ran on past a Northumberland Park call, a dedicated new platform would be required on the existing single line. The Metro station is a single island configuration there so there's no easy possibility of simply opening up a back face of a Metro side platform and using the existing access and facilities, something that might be plausible at the next station, Palmersville.

Indeed, since Northumberland Park will remain in Zone C, Zone A+B+C tickets will be valid on Northern trains between that station and Newcastle Central - so I would imagine it'd become a fairly attractive interchange, although Heworth doesn't seem to pick up many swapping from Metro to heavy rail.

Northumberland Park makes more sense as the metro interchange rather than Palmersville for a few reasons. Its a park and ride with a multi storey car park and it interchanges with the 19 bus that serves Cobalt and Silverlink business parks which are big employers and also connects to the Shields Ferry. Palmersville is quite a quiet station in comparison with a small car park serving a mainly residential area.

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld

Might a reason be as the Middlesbrough trains only run every 60 minutes, therefore not being a friendly interchange?

Agreed it's a much better hub all round, and if you're going from Ashington to Cullercoats or Tynemouth you'd save a couple of miles and the time involved in doubling back. There's a big multistorey Nexus car park and shops nearby as well.

And if you are going shopping, the Metro to Monument or Haymarket is more convenient than a train to the Central Station.

Press release

The Northumberland line will edge closer to running passenger trains once more this August Bank Holiday, as Network Rail upgrade a key section of the route.

Work to remove and replace a railway bridge near Sharnford Close, Backworth with a more modern, seamless structure will boost reliability for freight trains now, and make it possible for passenger trains to run in the future.

Between Thursday 25 and Tuesday 30 August, engineers will also lay nearly 200 metres of new track and bolster the supporting landscape.

Someone please remind me - is there a date in the PM's diary for the re-opening?

The current PM shouldn't be short of spare time by then.
He will be very short of spare time probably as he will be enriching hiimself with an endless round of talks and keynote speeches: "How I got Brexit done".

Plus I'm not sure he will know where Ashington is.

I imagine the drivers of the motorcade will know where to go from the helipad whoever is the PM.

Does an incoming PM 'inherit' the diary engagements of the 'has been'? I know Rishi and Liz have Hi-viz in their wardrobes- seen often on TV!

Expecting to see the newbie PM 'shovel-ready' somewhere soon.

Initially, yes, But they then go through it with the private office, and it is normal to have quite a lot of revisions (it’s a good excuse to let go of some things that no one really ever wanted to do in the first place).

There will be a very long list of people wanting to meet him or her ASAP. And there’s going to be quite a long list of things to do (given not much seems to happening at the moment and quite a lot is being deferred…).

Thank you Red Star- quite so. I was forgetting that an 'official' opening need not (and generally doesn't) correspond with planned first trains- too much to go wrong!

Passed by the site of Ashington Station over the weekend, site compound has been set up and lots of temporary fencing in place. Looks like the vegetation has been cut back (again) as well.

Local busineses and stakeholders are taking a special tour tomorrow on a class 158

Departs NCL at 11.19 and will slow at key points along the route before arriving back into Newcastle at 13.03 with a 6 minute layover in Morpeth at about 12pm. It won't run between Bedlington and Ashington but will take the Morpeth diversionary route.

These four by the looks of it, actually looks like two round trips.

I shall try to report back where possible, photos are permitted as far as I’m aware and they’re even stumping up a £10 Costa voucher for each guest!

Apparently the final lot of track works has now been awarded. In addition, as in the nearby town of Hartlepool, the derelict platforms at Ashington are soon to be demolished.

Can confirm the work has started in Ashington. The car park has been fenced off for the last couple of weeks and a site compound with offices etc has been constructed. Same at Newsham but have not been by the others. If I can grab a picture of the works next time I'm in Asha ill post it here.

Can anyone think of a reason why the old Ashington platforms actually need to be demolished, as the new single platform station is further south than the existing platforms, and at the end of a down siding? Does it possibly mean the through tracks are being repositioned slightly?

They are curved and in a pretty bad condition, all the edging was removed some years back by Network Rail to improve clearance. The publicity I have seen locally from the council seems to suggest not using the old platform does not preclude future extension to Newbiggin / the North.

Almost certainly wont meet the criterion for a new terminal platform, passenger egress height etc.

That’s already known, as I wrote we already know the new platform is offline and to the south of the existing station one reason being to prevent reversing passenger services blocking the line for freight - so there’s no obvious reason to remove the old platforms.
