Route retention for the York drivers who previously route learned and for any new York drivers to route learn it. Seems to happen every couple of months for a couple of weeks

If you want to use a Northern Only ticket/pass to travel from York to Scarborough at present, you do indeed need to travel via Hull.

If you are using a Northern Only pass, you may want to use www.fastjp.com and in the advanced options select Northern Only to obtain itineraries.

There were plan pre covid for northern to run via Malton to create 2 trains an hour with TPE but that got kicked into the long grass after covid but they've kept drivers knowledge up for train swaps and if it ever takes off for northern to provide a service

There’s talk again about a half hourly service provided by TPE, but not for a few years as TPE need to train staff. So could it be quicker for Northern to provide the second service if they already have some staff trained. Obviously both TPE and Northern need rolling stock

The aim of Northern drivers signing York - Scarborough is to allow units to be cycled for fuel/maintenance when the South end of the Wolds Coast is blocked. For example shut Beverley to Hull for a week and you eventually run out of fuel and exam miles to run between Beverley and Scarborough.

Funding was recently confirmed by DfT and the planning application is already being processed. Definitely a case of when not if. But completion date is being touted as 2028.

Don't think Northern have ever used it. Either way no repairs or exams could be done either way.

Virtually all units (Not quite all services are operated by Class 170) on the Hull to Scarborough Line (Yorkshire Coast) are based at Hull BG so rotate back to that depot. No Northern units are left at Scarborough on a night. Scarborough has a light servicing point operated by Arriva for Transpennine Trains for 185 units. Northern don't use it.

I'm surprised that the benefits of Northern drivers retaining this York - Malton - Scarborough route knowledge are outweighed by the costs in drivers' training time.

I guess the thing is they've realised that maintaining route knowledge is comparatively simple compared to regaining it once it's lost.

More over, if you think about it maintaining the compentency of Driver Managers and Trainers, who will eventually train the crews who... at some point... will work Northerns passenger service between York and Scarborough.

How about if the 2nd train an hour between Scarborough and York was part of a new Yorkshire circular route, Scarborough/Hull/York/Scarborough?

The only problem you've got is you would have to swap crew at Scarborough (or a lot of route learning) as York don't sign the coast and Hull don't sign via Malton

Unit allocation at northern doesn't mean much, it's barely more than a token gesture for TOPS. Add in that Hull can't do the heavier maintenance and it makes perfect sense to have the option of cycling units via York.

You don't even need to do that, if a 170 needs to go to Neville Hill, it is put in diagram BG362, which does the 0519 Sheffield, goes on Scarboroughs all day, ends at Hull at 2015, then attaches to form the rear of the 2115 Halifax, and detaches at Leeds for a booked XNL finish
