All seems to have gone quiet on the voluntary Sunday aspect of west side staffing. Possibly best not to expect too much too soon as resolution requires harmonisation of east and west side T&Cs which will require extra expense on both sides of the Pennines. No matter what Northern and the RMT hammer out, and members may vote to accept, it ultimately has to be paid for by the Treasury.

Hopefully they've given a steer to the Northern negotiating team so that whatever is put to a ballot will be accepted and that it is soon concluded. Any agreement is bound to get scathing media comment about the costs and services of railways, unions and railway pay in general!

I had a great experience at Blackpool North earlier today. Kept on the concourse until 30 seconds before a Manchester train was due to depart (hence it departed 3 minutes late).

Is it bad I was expecting the guard to blow the whistle and close the doors as the passengers were rushing towards the train so he got a right time departure?

Although the barrier member of staff was very friendly as my ranger didn't operate the barriers.

Well just as you thought Northern couldn't get any worse.
Due to emergency engineering work between Wakefield and Barnsley the only Northern service operating between Leeds and Sheffield is the stopping service via Moorthorpe (extended to Nottingham). So instead of the usual 4 trains per hour between Leeds and Sheffield it is just the one.
However today in their wisdom they have cancelled TWO consecutive trains (07.48 and 08.48) trains from Leeds.
Therefore no Northern service between 06.48 and 09.48.
An absolute disgrace!

After a few weekends without major disruption in South Yorkshire there are 25 cancellations or part cancellations affecting Sheffield this afternoon - all due to "a crew member unavailable".
Why do we get these variations?
Would seem there must be at least 8 turns uncovered.

Incoming rant over Northern...

This morning I checked the Northern App just as I was about to leave the house, 0632 from Manchester Victoria - On Time.

It takes me 10mins to walk to Victoria. By the time I got there, Cancelled... Infact they announced it at 0628 as I walked up the stairs to reach platform 5... Likely a 769, I never got to Platform so didn't look.

Rant over...

You are correct that it was a 769, but unsurprisingly it was cancelled from Man Vic to Wigan Wallgate due to lack of train crew and had to run empty to get there.

Thanks for that... atleast it wasn't a failure, a positive of sorts for the 769s I guess...

Loads of short-forming this week, probably the worst it's been for months. 3-cars running the rush hour commute on the Chat Moss yesterday was a bit cosy, and even the one that was running perhaps shouldn't have been given the deafening noise it was making (possibly from the air-con).

By contrast, travelled up to Carnforth on Tuesday. Train was 10 minutes down departing Chorley, but more-or-less right time when arriving into Carnforth, this due to a much shorter than normal dwell time at Preston. On the way back, first train (Carnforth to Lancaster) was just 3 minutes late, as also was the second train (Lancaster to Chorley) a little later. So, three very minor delays.

Quite unusual though, not to be making a small 'Delay Repay' claim when travelling with Northern! But not this Tuesday! ;)
