I was on a refurbished Sprinter the other day. I have no real issue with what they've done in theory, and it's certainly superior to what was there before, but the reliability of the newly fitted features seems somewhat poor. The new PIS screens were showing "c4" instead of the calling points, and I've been many trains with out-of-service toilets which are the same design that is being fitted. In one case I had a journey which involved two refurbished 165s, both of which has no working toilets.

My guess would be the CET tanks were full being of limited capacity due to space constraints under existing units.
They will fill up more in hot weather too as people drink more particularly when the air con as usual gives up and/or the operator has to hand oyt bottles of water.

That just leaves the five 170s that have (tired) first class saloons.

Obviously converting those back to standard, and adding 5 extra seats, is going to take more work... but does the industry have the parts around to reconstruct seats for these? Or are we likely to see a modern replacement such as the ironing boards said to be going into refurbished 158s?

150138 was seen on Airedale/Wharfedale turns yesterday. Presumably covering for a 333 or a 321/322. (probably semi-relevant since it is a refurbished unit)

Such a shame the 156 fleet aren't getting a proper refit, was on one yesterday and the seat bases are in a terrible state.

with the PRM date looming i think northern are getting the mods out of the way before they give them a proper refurb.
On another note 323234 should go for refurb either sunday or monday to wolverton.

Nope, what you see is more or less the "refurbishment" barring the angel 156s still need new seat coverings, lino flooring fitting and USB charging points whereas the porterbrook sets just need the USB charging points added in.

All in all, the priority is getting the units PRM modified and any corrosion work done. If most of the British rail stock is going to be retired by around 2030 then I totally get why the interior refurbishment is on the cheap side. It reminds me of the Tyne and Wear. Metro car refurbishment really, cheap not a huge amount of change(apart from colour scheme and any PRM work) and the whole point of the work was to improve any corrosion damage and make them last for only another 10 years.

So it's just the 150/1s that are getting the mods rushed through before going to crewe for refurb then as well as the 158s and the 156s getting the full works.

Does that mean that the 3 car 158s aren't getting the Ironing board seats like the 2 car 158s that have recently gone for refurbishment (and also like the 331s and 195s) and what about the other trains (such as 155s) which have the new livery, PRM mods, ect and no new seat covers, are they not getting the new seat covers either?

Northern are doing the refurbs in stages - the 2 car 158s seem to be getting everything done at once, whereas the 3 car sets had the PRM mods and a repaint but will presumably be going back at some point for the seating, wi-fi & usb stuff.

Thanks, although what @Paul_10 said sounded like the units that have had the new livery, PRM mods, ect but retained the old seat coverings are staying as they are without the new seat covers with only exception being the 156s (according to him). Thats what it sounded like to me though.

I don't really understand the refurbishment program. Is 158752 a refurbished unit? I travelled on it a few weeks ago and it was very comfortable. However, last week I travelled on a 2 car 158 (did not get the number) and this particular unit had ironing board seats which were not very comfortable.

As always, seats are subjective. I much prefer the new-style seats to the old, low-backed 158 seats, for example. Anyway, to answer your question, 158752 is part-refurbished and will (should) in future be fitted with the new-style - what you've referred to as 'ironing board' - seats.

Just to confuse things, some of the refurbed 158s haven't got Wifi and charging sockets yet (867 definitely doesn't) despite having been to Crewe for it's interior refit

Not sure if this has already been reported or not, refurbished 150220 has had USB charging points installed, this is the first 150 I have see with these.

158908 is sitting outside LNWR at Crewe looking almost complete fully branded and all new seats with covers on them. Another one in the paint shop next to it all painted but not yet numbered.

507021s excellent Northen fleet blog has just been updated (thanks).
See https://merseyrailpep507.blogspot.com/.
I make it 53 dmus left to do PRM mods. Not long now.

Thanks

thats an average of 10 a month and If my guess is right then im assuming that there will probably have to be 3 units left to do in the new year

A total of less than 10 units away to be completed in January would seem to be an acceptable result if they are fully completed . However won't many of the units still require to be away for various details to be finished off to be in the "as good as new" condition we were told would happen?
