Aren't there also two more 150s coming from elsewhere as once the 3 319s in the thameslink livery go, that makes 238 units going for a refurb (255 units if you count the 323s) and when those 3 150s join Northern from WMT that takes the total number back up to 241 units (258 units counting the 323s) and @507021 said there are 2 more 150s (on top of the 3 you mentioned) to join Northern to complete the the full fleet of 243 units (260 units counting the 323s).

Does the refurbishment of the 150/155/156s eventually involve installing air conditioning, usb sockets, seat back tables (on 150s) and free WiFi?

No plans for air-conditioning on stock that doesn't already have it. AIUI all trains will get wifi, but sockets (USB or standard 3-pin) are 158s, 170s (already fitted from Scotrail days) and new stock only.

I think a derogation, possibly with the bog locked out, is highly likely.

The PRM mods is more than just a new toilet, it's information systems and placement of door controls among other things. Also the pacers have a step inside the unit which is also non PRM compliant. If there are any derogations come the new year it will be the remaining non compliant sprinters that will get the paperwork done.

333015 is due to return to Neville Hill at the end of this month
(I've also put it on the Northern 333 refurbishments thread as its relevant to both but I posted on this here too since its likely to get more replies on this thread)

I doubt there will be any non compliant sprinters running after December but then again its Northern so you never know.

But I guess the only way it would work is if a non compliant unit is connected to a PRM compliant unit (this might be the case for the Northern 153s should they remain after december)

Well we've got 38 weeks to get 88 units PRM'd... that's roughly 5 units every 2 weeks (or 10 a month). How many are currently away and how's the turnaround time looking? Sounds like a stretch to me.

Maybe if Northern stopped the refurb programs of the units that already have PRM mods then there could be a chance that All unit have PRM mods in time for December this year. This also depends on how soon Northern get the 331s and 195s into service as if they enter service any later than mid August then the chances are that the PRM mods won't be complete.
The sooner the new CAF stock enters service, the earlier the pacers can start to be withdrawn from service (which would be better as they wouldn't be withdrawn altogether and they could phase them in groups of 3 or 4 at a time) and also the sooner they (The CAF stock)enter service then more units can be sent off for PRM mods which means all units will be done by December.

Is that why they're getting replaced by the 331s?
That may have been factored into the rolling stock strategy at the time of the bid, though replacing them with 331s was also a way of boosting capacity (6x23m replacing 4x20m)... However with the issues over platform lengths the original plans have gone out the window. The 4-car 331s will be a drop in (nominal) capacity despite being longer, due to the 2+2 seating.

It might be a drop in seating capacity but I think standing capacity will increase

I doubt they will be withdrawn by the end of this year, considering Northern's EMU shortage. They'd be stupid not to.

The EMU shortage (on the East side at least) is largely down to the 321/322 fleet being unreliable...

Indeed, the 321s were used very intensively on the Doncaster line (with occasional paths onto the triangle) prior to the 322s landing. But even with the extra 5 units the 321/322s are really starting to show their age. The 331s can't come soon enough, even if it is just the 4 car formations until platforms can be lengthened.

Currently on refurbished 158904. The seating and decor has been replaced as per 158845. But the original knackered tables have been kept and there’s no USB power sockets. The lighting has also not been replaced.

That unit must be going in for a further phase of refurbishment at a later date

This phased approach is very peculiar to me. My parents are currently in the process of refitting their kitchen and reorganizing the layout of the ground floor of their house. The Arriva Rail Northern approach would have seen them replace the units first, and then set about knocking walls down around them!

This shows two things
1) Northern's way of refurbing their trains is pretty Fu**ed up
2) Doing anything the Northern way wouldn't make sense

To be fair their are only a limited amount of places capable of doing all this work, and a huge amount of demand up and down the country. So this may be limiting what work can be done when. Plus your parent's kitchen isn't needed to transports hundreds of people around the place, there could be operational reasons that they can't afford to keep some units out long enough to do everything, like other units breaking down. Phased works like this is not an uncommon thing, indeed right now it's happening in my office! Works are planned in seemingly odd ways, but often it comes down to the availability of contractors and the logistics of keeping a minimal level of service running. Let's not forget that Northern's fleet is run very hard, and they don't have much wriggle room right now. I would imagine that accessability mods are far more important that charging someone's phone.

And anyway, most people travelling on Northern services probably won't get near enough to USB sockets to even use them until a lot more capacity is released....

I wouldn’t say it’s fu*ed Up due to timings but what I will say it’s inconsistent (on a few units) but this will change when Northern finish the PRMs and can go back to focus on refurbishment.

The priority is getting them up to PRM standard as quick as possible by spending the least amount of time out of traffic hence the phased approach
