It is only the North the people serving paper pushing bureaucrats in the South feel people should be crammed in as needed. It is also fine for them to be riding around in life expired rolling stock. The design aim by BREL for the Class 150 units was 30 years, perhaps no one noticed at the DFT that these units are end of life.
HSTs were quoted as having 10-15 year life when built, yet they are only actually getting to end of life stage now.

HST power cars have had huge amounts of engineering since built, the cab structure has been virtually rebuilt, new power units of course not to mention countless PIP and reliability packages being moved forward. What have the Class 150 units had new seat covers? Chapman seating being fitted if lucky! Some units have had parts of the internal panels painted, in some cases by brush! The amount of welding some Class 150 units have had is significant corrosion is considerable on many.

How old were the HSTs when rebuilt? Main element of the MTU programme was from 2006, when the oldest power cars were 30.

And if you could explain how the cab structure has been "virtually rebuilt" I'd be interested. AFAIAA some power cars have had their cabs off to repair/replace the plating below and delamination of the GRP has been addressed, but nothing much else.

I wonder how the commuter belt in London would respond to a rake of 142s every morning or better still the lovely 141s

I’ve been doing a study and on some 150 units over 75% of the sole bar is having to be replaced, it should be 6mm thick , I’ve seen 318s which had an 8mm solebar corroded below 2mm

Makes me wonder if the steel bodied 150, 155 etc are way past there economic life and it may be cheaper to procure new. I seem to remember reading somewhere one 150 needed a new roof.

150276 I think. I was on it on Friday, and it was certainly dry inside. Looked OK with nice well padded seating, but not for long.

Something similar to what GWR have done with their 150/2's would be perfectly acceptable in my opinion. I know they're not 3+2 but still, a similar standard of refurbishment would be fine.

Rather have a cumfy 158 any day! :D

Ideally Northern 150's should have been replaced as well but given the alleged struggle to justify Pacer Replacement clearly that was never going to happen, Im a little surprised they didn't at least Bin the 155's a small non standard Tin worm fleet which they could have covered by getting up to 5 more 156's from Scotrail and a couple more 195's.

It’s the last in our program for corrosion and prm Work , I doubt it will have an interior refresh before then as all the interior will be stripped out for the corrosion Work

Are the steel bodied 156's not suffering corrosion like the 142, 150,155 etc.
Perhaps they should have kept the aluminium bodied 144's which on routes with only good straight track are fine.

The issue with Pacers (other than people whining about them) is that converting them to be 2019 compliant (unless you don't have a bog) gives them too low a capacity to be useful, othe than possibly on the very occasional train these days for which a single Class 153 is presently adequate.

I certainly wouldn’t say that about the 3- car 144 sets which would be most useful and wouldn’t loose too much capacity with a DDA toilet and refit. With so much corrosion seemingly on the 150/153/155s designs from what people say I’d reckon that the 143/144 (but not the 142) could actually be more economic to continue. 144012 the 144evolution set didn’t take long to convert compared to the refurb of other 15x and it actually looks more modern than most of the 15x so refurbished. For basic commuter hops the 144e design works. And you tend to find it has a higher standing capacity than other unmodified sets.

No,no,no,no,no. It's still a glorified freight wagon! They're going thank god. Think of all those staff and commuters that have to use them day in, day out. Their backbones and spines will thank everyone for the decision to get rid.

Or ordering commuter versions of the 195 a la the 172.

In my local area there are lots of scheduled Pacer/Sprinter combinations, and I never manage to detect a mad scramble to get on the Sprinter. Lots of people are perfectly happy to travel on Pacers.

Do you remember when they used to regularly pair up with 158s in Regi Rail days? There very much was a scramble for the 158 then. Yeah 150s IMO are quite poor too but if a 156 was paired up with a 142 I know which I'd go for.

They shouldn't just be 'covering' what they've got at this stage. They need to be increasing capacity to match demand.

I've grown to rather like them. They're my daily commute and I often use them on longer distance journeys as well.

My main criticism of them is that the seats are too close together.

I was referring as to how they might have got rid of the small 155 fleet not a comment on Northern's overall fleet capacity.

This thread seems to have degenerated into a discussion about Pacers, OK I know some people seem to like them but I will be glad to see them go and perhaps we could get back on topic with regard to Northern Refurbishments which doesn't include Pacers.
