The units on those diagrams change daily down to unit availability. The Victoria/Wigan and Oxford road services can literally have anything on.

The Liverpool - Blackpool and Liverpool - Piccadilly are usually 156's (but again subject to change)

Sorry that's not very helpful but that's how Northerns fleet works unfortunately.

It's pot luck really.
I don't believe there is any consistency from day to day on these routes, though I don't see much of the CLC route trains - suspect they are mainly 142s.
Generally the Liverpool South Parkway-Blackpool trains are 150s, and the Liverpool Lime St-Manchester Airport (Picc for now) are 156s.
There are also usually several 156s on the other services, but also 150s and 142s.
Some days you can be lucky and catch all-156s, but the next time it will be all-142s.
One or two diagrams may be double units (of any type), but it's unusual for the Airport/Blackpools to be double.
You can get a heaving Blackpool 150 followed by an empty 4-car Wigan stopper.
The Airport disruption will also have changed the pattern for the next few weeks.

Thanks guys, lets hope I get a day when most are 156s, as I really want to avoid 142s!

CLC trains in the AM peak are usually 142s. 150s and 156s work most of the day with 156s usually leaving Manchester in the evening peak.

I use this line on a daily basis so hope this helps, very general I know but that's how it is with Northern!

Liverpool-Warrington Bank Quay and Wigan have all been pacers in my limited experience.

What is CLC? I think that code is for Castle Cary.

The Cheshire Lines Committee:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheshire_Lines_Committee
The Cheshire Lines Committee (CLC) was the second-largest joint railway in Great Britain, with 143 route miles...It served Liverpool, Manchester, Stockport, Warrington, Widnes, Northwich, Winsford, Knutsford, Birkenhead, Chester and Southport.
These days it is typically used to refer to the Stockport to Chester route via Altrincham and Northwich.

That's the Mid Cheshire Line. The CLC runs from Liverpool to Manchester via Widnes, Warrington and Birchwood.

They are both the CLC, with the same heritage.
Give or take a few connecting lines of other parentage.

Pot luck really. For example the fast Liverpool-Manchester Picc I had yesterday was 150268.

Everytime I see the LIV-MCV services they're in the hands of anything except 158s! I've had 150s, 156s and of course 142s on those. No point us telling you what worked them recently as it'll have no bearing on what works them when you go up!

There's also the point that you should embrace the 142 now, before they start going! Yes they might not be shifting any time deadly soon, but who knows what's around the corner? Not that I'm rushing to do any 142s of course, but I'm also not purposefully avoiding them!

Thanks Techniquest!

Does this mean there could be a 155/153 on it too, as I would definitely be on that!

As for the 142/3/4s, I don't want to ever travel on one as my record is currently clean whereas my dad has had one. That is something o hold on to! Besides, I think they look, smell and sound horrible, not to mention that you would have a bad back by the end. Have you seen anything other than 142s on the Liverpool to Wigan trains and the Liverpool to Warrington trains?

Thanks!

Badly worded, my fault...

155s don't visit Liverpool, the closest I've ever seen one get to Lime Street is Manchester Victoria. 153s, I can't honestly remember seeing one at Lime Street in all of my visits.

If a 153 or 155 were to produce at Lime Street I'd be well up for it!

Fair enough.

LIV-WGN I've had 142s, 150s and 156s on those services, LIV-WBQ is normally 156 in my experience but I have also had a pair of 142s on that once. I wouldn't be surprised if 150s also make it onto those occasionally.

Thanks! I don't really want to be stuck at Wavertree waiting for a 150 or 156 for ages so I might just go between LPY and LIV unless something really rare shows up.

Thanks again and hopefully I will get quite a few Northern winners on Thursday!

Anything (ie 142/150/156) can turn up on any of these services. No 153/155/158s though.
There are about 15 units deployed on any one day (routes via Huyton), and at least off-peak they usually keep to the same route.
So whatever is on the 0920 to MCV will be on the 1102 back and then the 1220 to MCV etc.
But they do interwork if there are any delays.
My guess is that there are usually 5x142, 5x150 and 5x156 working out of Lime St (via Huyton, can't vouch for the CLC trains).
So not difficult to pick and choose at Lime St.
You can also predict what will return from WGN/WBQ/MCV if you see the outbound working.
But if you find yourself at Victoria and a 142 turns up on the xx02, you have to wait an hour for the next and it may be another 142!
This train lays over in the siding to the west of Victoria for half an hour, so you can check what it is in advance.
Or you could just catch the TPE fast instead.
Or get a train to Wigan and try your luck to Liverpool from there (but very likely to be a Pacer to Wigan!).

I think I am right in saying the 1320 is usually a 142, but as others have noted, there is potential for a 150 or 156 to turn up instead.

There don't seem to be that many pacers on CLC now, the 07:26 from Liverpool and the return from MCO has at least one on it, but other than that I can't remember the last time I saw one, which is good seeing as its my local line!

Thanks!

153s and 155s and 144s will never make it near Piccadilly, Liverpool or wigan because crews at them depots don't sign them. Man Vic crews (possibly not all links) sign 153/5s and 144s because they regularly appear on Leeds - Man Vic services. Think there's also booked work for 153s up to Blackburn.

What about Calder Valley DMUs. We seem to get a right mix of stuff through now. Think Northern switched to mainly 158s :( :( :( which is a shame, but we can still get 150s, 155s and the odd pacer rattling through. What would I have to do to avoid the 158s? I really don't like them!!

It depends where you are traveling to and from, as there might be routes to get to your place with a low chance of a 158.
