One of the first questions is...

“Using Google Maps to check your post code against the post code for the station you are applying for, do you live within 45-minute drive time to that station? (Your address will also be double-checked by the recruitment team using google maps in peak and off-peak times.”

That counts me out, even though I would quite happily relocate.

How strict is this? I’m an hour away

Well I highly doubt that they would refuse to accept you because google maps makes an estimate which shows you are slightly further away than they want

Go for it

Please don't give out false information. The rule is in place for good reason and very strict.

The echo what others have said; They certainly would discard a candidate based in this. There’s will be hundreds of people to chose from who do live within an hour and it’s commonplace for TOCs/FOCs to use Google Maps or similar to ascertain distances.

That’s not to say I’d discourage anyone on the border of what’s acceptable to apply. You’ve got to be in it to win it after all.

Well if this is the case then it's silly

Google maps is an estimate

Say he lives 46 minutes away instead of 45 (this is an estimate made by a bot mind you), then they simply wouldn't reject it. To say they would is simply ridiculous

This is right:

But the comment you replied to said they're an hour away. They look at off-peak and peak times, so if it's an hour on a quiet day I'd say the chances are pretty low unfortunately.

Does anyone know if you specify that you would relocate to within the 45 minutes threshold, if that would be acceptable?

They have decided that 45 is the max

Fatigue

If they accepted people at 49/52 then 1 hour would be acceptable too. There has to be a limit 45 is the limit not a minute more its a good idea to limit applicants too

In my experience they're very reluctant to accept people on the basis of they'll relocate.
They've had their fingers burnt a few times by people going through all the training and getting passed out then banging in a welfare move or transfer request

This is right:
If you’re talking one or two minutes outside the commuting time then you may be lucky, but estimate or not, that’s how it’s done. It’s a captive audience at the end of the day, and they can pretty much do what they want within reason.
