Northern trainee driver holidays once out with instructor

Quick question for any Northern trainee train drivers in the know:

I am of the understanding that during the initial 16 week classroom training you are allocated one set week's holiday if you have passed all relevant assessments. My question is, once you are out with your instructor, do you do all of the same hours as him/her (including taking your annual leave when they've booked theirs in), or will I be able to take one particular week off? I appreciate I am incredibly lucky to have been accepted as a trainee driver and will clearly cancel my week's holiday if that's what's required of me. It'd just be nice to know in advance!

Thank you to anybody who can help.

You get 1 week during training as you mentioned.

Once out with your minder you follow the same shifts they do but you can take holiday whenever you want; you don't have to have holiday at the same time as your minder. If your minder is on leave then you might be put with another minder temporarily or will be front ending.

Have you had the call? I've already booked a holiday for next september, can't put our lives on hold. Hopefully if i ever get the call I'll be able to book the leave!

With an instructor you will get pretty much any leave you request as you don't affect the running of the depot in any way (you are mirroring the instructors shift so they drive it if you aren't in) - of course it will slow your progress down slightly as your instructor will take their holidays separately, so if there are no other instructors available you may lose out on that instruction time as well.

During the classroom phase you only get the built in week, you cannot take any leave other than some compassionate or sick leave, but even that is strictly limited - if you miss too much you will be back-coursed.

I'm out with instructor now and just been told we arnt going into the holiday roster till 2018, bonus as I can take my leave as and when next year, I just take off what my instructor does at the min as it suits and it saves front ending for a week, with all the trainees coming through its very unlikely I would get another instructor

I'm in a similar position - I booked a 2 week holiday for July 2017 on 14/7/16, and applied for this job on 22/7/16.

I have been through all of the process and been successful - they did want me to start on 28/11/16, but I could make the medical date I was given, so I have been deferred until a January course...........these are planned courses, but not yet confirmed.

I am just hoping that I can get the 2 weeks off given that it is pre-booked and a substantial chunk of it is paid for, but if not, then I'll have to cut my losses.

Fingers crossed and hoping!

Yeah, fingers crossed! Sounds fairly promising though. You mentioned the January courses are planned but not confirmed. Out of interest, was it HR who said this and when? Just because they seemed pretty sure the course commencing 16th Jan was a sure thing and I'll be needing to hand my notice in on Monday if so! I spoke to the lady at Northern on the 9th about it and it was for the Leeds classroom.

Any trainee I've had with me can take his holiday and lieu days whenever it suits them. With no problems whatsoever

This was approx 2 weeks ago - I was advised that the courses are planned, but had not been confirmed. However, the likelihood of course not being finalised is pretty much non-existent.
