Hi Everyone,
I am new to this forum but was wondering if anyone has any advice for an interview with Northern following a successful application for the train driver apprentice role please? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

You'll have been sent a handy little guide from Northern once they confirm your interview date and time. Essentially it'll tell you that the questions will be competency based.

"Tell me about a time you have followed rules and procedures?"
Or "tell me about a time you have worked in a team?" Those sort of questions you'd kind of expect to be asked.

Theres no need to rush your answers. Use the old sip a glass of water trick to get some thinking time. And if you don't understand the question, be honest with the interviewers, they may be able to reword it for you. There was a question I wasn't sure of and asked them if they could reword it.

It's best to answer these questions using the STAR technique;

Situation
Task
Action
Result

Again all of this will be mentioned in the guide sent out. Don't be alarmed if you haven't received this guide from Northern, it took a couple of days for them to confirm my interview time.

Also do your own research on the company just incase you get asked what do you know about Northern.

This.

The STAR method is what the recruitment teams are wanting to see. A good candidate will use this to his or her advantage.

Good luck

Throughout the whole process I've only gone by the material given to me prior to interview and assessments. This forum is a godsend for advice so use it to your advantage but try not to overthink things.

I've applied a few times for this role and been knocked back majority of the times. But with the interviews you get experience and know what the interviewers are looking for.

The bits I failed on I asked for feedback and gained some experience I could use as evidence during my interview when I made it through. Keep noted on all your interviews and applications. You can then see where you need to work on.

I start Feb 14th with Northern, it hasn't been easy, it's been a long process but it's going to be life changing.

Well deserved! I didn’t realise that they gave feedback so that will be so useful. Was the interview very similar each time? Best of luck with your new role.
